Hmm...  It depends on how determined this idiot is.  If you are talking about
Preferences, then no, it will not make the monitor recieve something that it
knows it shouldn't.  However if this guy goes over to the back of the pc, and
hard-wries his 1084 into the VDE port, then... well, lets not consider that an
operating system's obligation to check for that.

I don't know what you'd need one o' those for, but I'll have one too if some-

You have to declare that you have a suitable monitor hooked up, in your
startup-sequence, to make the 31.5 modes "available".  You can always
lie to your startup-sequence, but in my experience, monitors don't
care too much if you feed them the wrong signal.  They just look "funny".

I think the "exploding monitors" myths come out of IBM's original monochrome
monitor and trying to program your Hercules card in basic.
