I've tested all archiv-utilities for the Amiga (except arc :-) and this is what came out: To archive: My entire libs: directory, 468572 bytes. archiver | archive size | time in sec.s | percentage | pack index | | to create arch. | gain | *) ------------------------------------------------------------------- zoo | 333481 | 40 | 28.83 | 3.37 | | | | lharc | 263990 | 227 | 43.66 | 0.9 | | | | lharca | 262753 | 148 | 43.92 | 1.39 | | | | zip | 271676 | 149 | 42.02 | 1.32 ------------------------------------------------------------------- *) pack index: Time is money, so the packing time is very important. A good index should therefore be calculated of the gain bytes in relation to the time used to gain these bytes. Here's the (trivial) formula: (bytes gain)/(time in secs * 1000) My personal favorite is Zip. It is a bit less effective than lharca, but and the GUI looks so nice :-) (no, I DON'T want to start this discussion again). However, if I have to compress lots of data (e.g. Sculpt 24 bit RGB-files, each picture taking up >900 K) I use zoo. -- ------------------------------------ Chris Brand - wizard@sosaria.imp.com "Justice is the possession and doing of what one is entitled to" - Platon ------------------------------------
