[comp.sys.amiga] Hard Disk Validation Failure...

hunt@boulder.Colorado.EDU (Lee Cameron Hunt) (05/30/90)

I asked this a week ago in c.s.a.t and got no reply so I'm asking
it here...

Whilst moving a file on my hard disk I got a write error. It seemed to go
away after I hit "Retry," but upon a later reboot my hard disk tried (and
failed) to validate. An error requestor was put up saying (something like):
"Key 180840 already set."

I know which file caused the error, but I cannot alter it (eg: erase it) 'cause
AmigaDOS won't let me touch an unvalidated disk. So I ask, is there anything
I can do short of backing up the entire disk and reformatting? And what is
a AmigaDOS "key" anyway? I'm up for some low-level AmigaOS hacking if
necessary...

Thanks much...

Well, yes, backing up and reformatting is one way. Bit of a pain, though.
You need to get a program such as DiskZap or Sectorama and kill the file
that way (well, actually, you'd kill the bad key and its relatives). You can
get either of these programs from CompuServe or Bix or one of the other
networks. Heck, they're on Fish disks, too. Possibly one of the archive
sites would have it.

Good luck!
