[comp.sys.amiga] Eliza for the Amiga

hamish@waikato.ac.nz (05/31/90)

Has anybody ever heard of an Eliza for the Amiga. One of the lecturers
here would like to experiment with it, and perhaps do some research.

Might even be able to sell him on a 3000 if it does exist.

Thanks in advance.

There are several ``Eliza'' for the Amiga. Fred Fish Disk #13 has the
Eliza.abc and Eliza.bas programs.

And an assembly language version (available on Amiga BBS systems) has:

	----ar-e- 88-07-07 02:53:58   21    10680 Eliza
	----ar-e- 88-07-07 02:52:26   90    45248 Eliza.asm
	----ar-e- 88-07-07 03:22:46   13     6287 Eliza.doc
	Dirs:0    Files:3    Blocks:124   Bytes:62215

Extracts from the Eliza.doc file:

*    AUTHOR'S NOTES
*    --------------
 ...
* ELIZA is an Artificial Intelligence simulation developed by
* Joseph Weizenbaum of MIT in 1965. Eliza was named after Eliza
* Doolittle in George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, which was
* subsequently used as the basis for the musical, My Fair Lady.
*
* Shaw's Eliza was a flower girl who was taught by phonologist
* Henry Higgins to talk "like a lady". Weizenbaum's Eliza does a
* remarkable job of carrying on a conversation that at times seems
*   intelligent.
 ...
* To the best of my knowledge, this is still the only hand
* assembled version of Eliza for any personal computer.
*
* ELIZA has always been one of my favorite programs and this
* has essentially been an ongoing labor of love. Enjoy!

*   INSTRUCTIONS
*   ------------
* Eliza MUST be invoked from the CLI.
*
* Just type: 1> [run] Eliza (The "run" is optional)
*
* Please *do not* attempt to make an icon for this program! It
* opens a CON: window and MUST be called from the CLI. I'm not
*   kidding.
*
* All input lines may be up to 80 characters long and must be
* terminated with a punctuation character (actually anything, the
* last character is discarded) and a carriage return.

There is an Eliza -like program for the Amiga called Racter. Unfortunately
I do not know who wrote it or who distributes it. You may be able to get
source code from a number of Universities, try the cognitive sci or
artificial intelligence depts.
