[comp.sys.amiga] ***** QUESTION: A1000 cheap, or A500 & debt? <sincere questions> ****

hassell@boulder.Colorado.EDU (Christopher Hassell) (06/03/90)

I have a serious question now. I'm all the more jumpy now that I have heard
the e-discounts are gonna bite it by the 30th.

I am a SERIOUS UNIX(R) Hacker(TM). I am even interested in garbling around in
assembly and rewriting the boot-up-ROM schtuff for the FUN of it. <while trying to keep a semblance of compatibility. I want to get a decent C compiler..
they write my own.

Nothing speshul.

My main criteria: Is a 512K A1000 worth it.....
given need as a decent terminal/printstation,
[NEEEED is the key word here, and I suppose it would be easy]
	as a C-compiling machine <for Amiga-PD programs mostly>,
even as a hackible machine (for adding me own hw...
after I've tamed parts of it of course)
	even some multi-tasking fool business?

That is my main set of qwestions. I posted this to .hardware as well because
that is where I hear the BIG dead-ends are. Consider as well, I MAY or MAY NOT
have an actual Amiga-Keyboard. I might have to adapt an IBM <yuk>.

I'm also happy with simply having access to Amiga-quality graphics of any sort.
I'm looking into many things but all the Amigites I know have big chequebooks
and were C= salesmen. You figger it out
("BUY THE 3000 NOW!! YOU GOT IT!! NOTHING ELSE IS TOLERABLE!").

OH ALSO: UNIX compatibility... as in uucp/nntp or any other connections
possible are also a big question mark. For about $250.

IF the situation is as bad as it seems, I spose I wanna see why. I am now a
UNIXite who was an avid Apple-fan as many have been. Amiga is now de way to go
mon. How bad does it look? I MAY have about $1000 disposable for this at the
END of summer, but that is about it.

Thanks for any all and spurious amounts of help. If someone starts a flame war
over this because of machine-level-loyalty... my sinceremost threats to all
his pets lives. Other than that.. sorry if there be offense.
