[comp.sys.amiga] Modem cable needed to connect IBM modem to my A2500

lord_zar@ucrmath.ucr.edu (wayne wallace) (06/02/90)

Like the title says, I've got a modem (GVC Super Modem 2400) but I need the
cable to connect it to my Amy. The back of the modem has a port with the
word: RS-232C
so I'll assume I need such a cable. :-)
do I need a special cable for Amiga hookup (it's an external modem) or will
a standard cable do?

if so, since I seem to have trouble locating such a beast, anyone have one
they wanna sell cheap, or can point me to a nice cheap mail-order place or
something?

advTHANXance.

The modem will work just fine using pins 1-8 + 20. This should be a very cheap
cable to buy. It wouldn't suprise me if your old cable worked as well but, make
sure that pins 9 and 10 (12 volts) are not going to the modem just to be safe.
All else is OK.

A standard able will do OK. There are 2 pins on the serial port that carry
power (pins 9 and 10 have + and - 12 volts). These could be left out of the
cable. I straight through ribbon cable can be made from parts at Radio Shack
for about $15. That is what I did and then cut off pins 9 and 10 on the male
connector. It works just fine...

It would probably be faster and just as cheap to get the parts for a ribbon
cable and build your own.
