[comp.sys.amiga] A501 Problems

consp11@bingvaxu.cc.binghamton.edu (Optimist Prime) (09/25/89)

I've had my Amiga 500 for two years now, and I've recently beenhaving some
troubles with it's A501 card. I'm running a completely unexpanded system
(i.e.: 1 disk drive, no speedups, no extra hardware at all, etc.) aside from
my A501. Sometimes, when I boot up, the SETCLOCK OPT LOAD command in my
startup-sequence returns <invalid> <invalid> <invalid> instead of the
current date and time. This has happened to me twice this week, and about
four times in the past year. (I've had it for about 1 and a half years).

I've tried re-seating it a number of times (the computer travels to and from
my school with me 4 times a year), and it seems fine, but then out of nowhere,
it dies again. Does anybody have any suggestions?

I have had my Amiga for just over a year now. For the first three or four
months, my A501 clock was sometimes 'off in dream-land' as you refer to.
I have no reason as to why. I haven't moved my Amiga in the last 1/2 year,
and since then have never experienced clock problems. Maybe a loose chip?
Just my first few months when I was moving my Amy when I had this problem.

Perhaps the battery that's inside the A501 is dead or almost dead. Try
replacing it with a new one (you may want to check if your battery is o.k.
before geting a new one). If this is not the case, It could be the clock/
calendar chip inside the A501.

	Hope this helps!.

Hello there - I just sold my Amiga 1000 and bought an Amiga 500.
I'm having serious problems with this Amiga 500 and I'm regretting my
decision to sell my 1000. This is what has happened so far and if
anyone knows of a solution at a reasonable cost please email me or
mail me here or at MXJ2361@RITVAX.BITNET or V117KDDL@UBVMS.BITNET
Many many thanks in advance.

Here are the problems:

(1) The Amiga 500 seems to lock up frequently - when I powerup sometimes
the capslock key starts to blink and the keyboard is locked up. If I
reseat the A501 unit it sometimes works, or if I leave the computer off
for 5 minutes it will boot fine.
(2) The internal drive on the Amiga 500 seems to have problems telling
if a disk is formatted or bad, if the write protect is on. I seem to
get read/write errors more frequently and sometimes disk read good and
other times they are NON-DOS.
(3) My C= 2002 Monitor died within a week after I had hooked it up to
my Amiga 500. At first, at boot up I would get a blue screen/black
screen then I would get the workbench prompt. At times the screen
would brighten and dim and finally one day the screen flashed and
then snapped and crackled. After turning it back on, the screen was
totally out of sync. The picture was semi-visible but there was alot of
distortion. Totally unusable. Also, sometimes when using my US
Robotics HST 1440 modem on my Amiga, I would hear characters being send
to my modem being echoed via my Speaker on my Amiga 500.

The following questions are based on where/ and how much:
I'm looking to purchase the following type items for my Amiga 1000, used
or new.
(1) A expansion chassis with two or more Zorro II spec slots, with or
    without power.
(2) An inexpensive memory upgrade card I already have the A501 card, and
would like to get an A2000 compatible card
(3) An inexpensive hard drive setup with autoboot.

Many thanks in advance, pardon any mistakes, this is my first time using
this system.

Recently, I bought 2 Mb of RAM for my A590 (A500's 20 Mb hard drive
with sockets for 2 Mb). After installing the RAM, I ran the RAMTest
software provided and everything was fine. This was about two weeks
ago. Last week, my A500 started reseting itself during boot. It
would start to load WB and then reset. There were no weird screen
colors (ie. no green screen to indicate bad RAM).

My first reaction was to remove the A590 and make sure the
computer was okay. To my surprise, the computer still kept reseting
itself. My next move was to remove the A501 memory expansion. After
this, my Amiga was fine. No reseting. I reconnected the A590 and
reran the RAMTest software. No memory problems in the new RAM.

So, what is wrong with my A501? It is about 2 years old.
Is the RAM bad? (If the computer didn't reset, it would GURU with
"illegal instruction".) This seems like a RAM problem. How can I
check? Is there an easy fix?
