You can't please everyone...and this is proven by the recent discussions on v2.0 of the Amiga's OS. No matter how nice something is, someone will always find something to nitpick about (I was going to say something about people expecting to find menus inside of SHELLS, but I won't...). I think the new OS is great...not only is it the best, in my opinion, personal computer GUI in both style and functionality, it can also hold its own when compared with the likes of Motif and other UNIX interfaces. I've just got one question...what will the final version of 2.0 look like, when it's frozen in ROM? How many of you have noticed the dissimilarities among versions of 2.0? I have seen FOUR...subtle differences, but they were there. Go look at the A3000 setup at your local dealership. Then look at the screen-shots in the system's manual. Now go look at the photos in BYTE and AmigaWorld. While the overall look was the same, 3-D windows, more convienient sliders, and a triangular window resizer...check out the top window gadgets, the close, zoom, and depth gadgets. How many others can YOU spot?;^) //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// UUCP: ...!crash!pnet01!pro-party!seanc | ARPA: !crash!pnet01!pro-party!seanc@nosc.mil | " Fanatics have their INET: seanc@pro-party.cts.com | dreams, wherewith they | weave a paradise for RealWorld: Sean Cunningham | a sect. Would it make sense to add the ability to Draw-Your-Own-System-Gadgets-Etc? How about making it a Preferences tool? I guess this one's too late for 2.0, though. ._. [ ... ] Hmm, a pet peeve of mine. While I agree that endless whining and complaining can be annoying, I strongly object to the notion that one must not criticize. Yes, based on preliminary judgements, 2.0 looks very nice, and by all means Commodore is to be commended for all their work as of late. However, it is completely reasonable to point out areas that seem to be lacking. There are different ways of doing that, however. MB tends to do it in such a way as to piss people off (myself included), so some tend to simply ridicule everything he says. In this particular instance (menus inside of shells), there are certainly valid reasons against it, but it is by no means the stupidest suggestion ever, nor is it unreasonable to be disappointed that this feature was omitted, particularly given that some other generally well-regarded systems do have it. Eeps, this is getting too long. To summarize: incessant bitching and moaning is generally unproductive, but there's nothing inherently wrong with pointing out problems where they exist. That's what drives progress, after all. #define SOAPBOX OFF - Neil --==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==-- Neil Weinstock @ AT&T Bell Labs // What was sliced bread att!edsel!nsw or nsw@edsel.att.com \X/ the greatest thing since?

In-Reply-To: message from walrus@wam.umd.edu The only problem with this idea is "inconsistency between applications"...with 2.0, this is supposed to be frowned apon. This has been one of the things that is brought up most while discussing the Amiga's windowing system...everyone does there own thing. Some standards for "look and feel" are going to have to be enforced...Apple did do SOME things right besides marketing. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// UUCP: ...!crash!pnet01!pro-party!seanc | ARPA: !crash!pnet01!pro-party!seanc@nosc.mil | " Fanatics have their INET: seanc@pro-party.cts.com | dreams, wherewith they | weave a paradise for RealWorld: Sean Cunningham | a sect. The OS2.0 you see now is far from the 'final' version. Latest info has it that the A3000 ships on June 18. \marc ============== 'I do not fear computers.. I fear the lack of them' -- I. Asimov RNM
