[comp.sys.amiga] My turn on the Hard Disk

rod@venera.isi.edu (Rodney Doyle Van Meter III) (06/09/90)

OK, my turn. This one pops up here once every couple of months, at
least. I finally trashed my hard disk, it gets a validation error (key
not set, or already set, or somesuch). I looked back through our c.s.a
files, and we don't keep them far enough back to have an answer, and I
couldn't find one on Xanth or in the newsgroup monthly into. Probably
we should put a description of this in one place or the other.

So, can somebody mail me a description of how to go about this? Is
DiskSalv my only reasonable choice (I thought about asking Dave Haynie
directly, but he's a busy guy)? If so,

1) I remember somebody saying you do disksalv from hd0: to df0:,
right? Then how do you restore?

2) The builtin help (which is a little minimal) says something about
formatting the drive before a restore. It won't trash the other
partitions, will it? For that matter, what's the restore switch, R?

3) Can I change my partitions before restoring, as long as I don't
make the destination smaller than my files to be restored?

4) Are there reasonable choices for dong this in place, without having
to disksalv to floppies?

If somebody gives me a reasonably complete description, I'll move it
Zanth incoming/amiga, and/or mail to the guy who keeps the monthly
intro.

			Thanks,

and sorry to bring this up for the umpteenth time,
