I forget which version it's in, but it wasn't in 1.05, so you should really
upgrade. FComp is great!

And now... for something completely different... a man with three...*CUT*

Help, does Bill Hawes' WSHELL (A wonderfully wonderful product) have
file-name completion? (I use it so often on the Suns that I miss it greatly
here.)

I heard somewhere that Wshell comes with a executable Fcomp which will
accomplish this. But I haven't been able to find it anywhere. I have
Version 1.05.

Thanks in advance.

The update to 1.05 is 1.2. Appendix D. includes a discussion of
the filename completer. Fcomp. Fcomp includes a cache and can
do keymapping. It is indeed a seperate program as is pathman.

I use Wshell all the time and just found out about using inline
arexx programs.

I updated around Jan. of this year when he had a special offer
mailed to me. He has been very good about mailing to regester
users. I never expected getting a card back thanking me for my
shareware contribution to conman and then letting me know wshell
would soon be updated (that came in Oct). Sure enought in Dec.
I got a notice about 1.2. I like getting feedback when I send in
those registration card. It certainly makes a good impression.

BTW the Wshell manual was produced with AmigaTeX.

Yes, he sure has. And it's the nicest filename completion I've run
across so far.

Yes. All registered owners of WShell were notified of the upgrade in
December '89 I belive. (Since I betatest WShell for Bill, I don't get
the upgrade notices, so I wouldn't know.)

Now, why should you be able to find it anywhere? People who own the product
get the updates from Bill. People who haven't registered should, since
Bill's support is THE best I've encountered so far. (He even spells my name
and address correctly.)

You need version 1.2 (or is it 1.3 --- no almost certainly 1.2).

OK, I'm putting my reg card in the mailbox as I type :) I've only had
the program for three days, so I don't think I'm too late.

Was the upgrade Free?!

Thanks for all those that replied.

You have purchased at the wrong time, and have been caught in the middle. It
happens.

Lightspeed may or may not have 'had to order it from Mr. Hawes', ie.
Lightspeed may have ordered from a distributor, and even if they did, it may
indeed have been before 1.2 was already shipping. Your beef may not be with
Bill at all.

Are you sure he received your letter? This does not sound like Bill at all. He
is dedicated to product excellence and support, and is very fair in his
dealings, an observation made from both personal experience and the reports of
others. I will pass your comments along to him via Compuserve, or you can do it
yourself via the Internet by mailing to him at:

I wouldn't say THE best, for me that goes to Lattice. I had a rather bad
experience with WShell and Mr. Hawes' product support. I bought WShell this
January as a companion for ARexx and found it to be a nice (but not spectacular)
shell. I sent in my registration card and a week later I got a notice (post-
marked Jan. 29) that WShell was being updated and I could upgrade for "just"
$10 but if I wanted the manual that would be $20 more. That $30 total, and
that's what I paid for it not two weeks earlier!
I wrote a letter to Mr. Hawes explaining that I bought WShell 1.05
after 1.2 was already available and that I thought it must have been some sort
of mistake that I got an old version. I had ordered the package from Lightspeed
and they didn't have it in stock so they had to special order it from Mr. Hawes.
The only explanation that I can think of is that Mr. Hawes was clearing out his
supply of WShell 1.05 and manuals at the same time he was shipping version 1.2.
To this date, I have not received any kind of response from Mr. Hawes.
That is not what I call support. Product support is more than just sending out
update notices. For me that notice was not a courtesy but a way of milking me
out of $30 more.
I intend to keep writing to Mr. Hawes and I hope he will respond since
I would like to have WShell 1.2 but I refuse to shell out an extra $30 for
something I should have gotten in the first place.

I asked the original question and since then, have sent in my registration
card. Now if it's gonna cost me $30 to upgrade, I would not be a happy
customer. Can anyone else confirm this price?

Several comments...

First, are you sure that LightSpeed ordered it from Bill? Usually, these
places deal with a distributor, not directly with the author, so I find it
far more likely that LightSpeed ordered it out of the warehouse of some
distributor, not directly from Bill.

Secondly, every update includes full documentation for all new features
on the disk, so you don't need the new manual to get documentation for the
new features. The offer for the new manual was originally intended for
people (like me) who bought pre-release versions before the production
documentation was available--Bill didn't expect most people to order it.

Thirdly, $30 seems like a pretty reasonable update fee to me, for a package
with a new manual. That you got the original package for $30 is irrelevant.
It would be nice if he shipped the update disk for free, since you bought
WShell after the new release, but at the price Bill sells WShell and ARexx
at, I doubt he has much margin to play with. There's a big difference
between supporting a $50 product and supporting a $200 product like Lattice.

It is uncharacteristic for Bill not to answer. I do get the impression
that he's a little busy lately, which may be due to the crunch to get
2.0 (and the ARexx version for 2.0) ready to ship, but that's not an
excuse. All I can say is that I have found always found Bill to be
helpful and responsive. By all means, write him again and see what
happens. Overall, I'd probably rank Bill over Lattice for customer
support, largely because he ships products with *far* fewer bugs. But
Tomas Rokicki has them both beat.

Disclaimer: I have no connection with Bill Hawes except as a satisfied
customer.
