[comp.sys.amiga] FAST DIRECTORY!

barton@latcs1.oz.au (The Wasp) (06/11/90)

I am a 500 owner with an external 3.5" drive etc... The basic setup.
I do not have a hard disc (woe is me...) and am getting sick of waiting
5 minutes (well... not quite!) for a directory listing.

What makes matters worse is that I use cshell and it sorts the directory into
alphabetical order which is nice but slow! (not that I dislike cshell, its
a great utility!)

BUT....

I want something like what is offered in CliMate, a fastdir option.
This allows the fdir (lets call it that) program to look for a .fastdir
file in the cwd and if found lists the dir from that! It must also have an
option to check the .fastdir file for validity and update it if necessary, say
by checking the modification time of the dir against the .fastdir files
modification time (just an idea???) so that if the contents of the dir
has changed since last update then re-update the .fastdir file. This update
should be fast as it would need to be done pretty often, maybe even have an
option that allows recursive checking of all directories below the cwd and
including the cwd. (cwd -Current Working Directory)

Does something like this exist... Can something like this be written if it
doesn't already exist... Could someone out there who can/has write/written
one of these email me please!
