I saw the full page ads in my school's newspaper, the California Aggie. I too, agree that the Amiga needs better representation on college campuses. Particularly, at the UCD Bookstore's annual computer fair. IBM, Macintosh, SUN, and HP all get booths, so why doesn't commodore? Me and a couple of friends are thinking about starting our own booth, if we get permission from Commodore and financing from a few local dealers. Actually, Commodore, if you're listening, we've talked to the manager of the show and a couple of dealers already... do we need permission fromm Commodore to actually run the booth? Jason Freund.

In-Reply-To: message from gt1619a@prism.gatech.EDU There are Compus representatives for Commodore. The more potential your school and your student body have for buying Commodore 64s, Amigas, or Commodore-IBM-MS-DOS clones, the more chance you have of getting a rep. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProLine: DanB20@pro-graphics ************************ UUCP: ...crash!pro-graphics!DanB20 * Daniel G. I currently attend Boston University and am active in the Amiga user group here. There are roughly 10,000 undergraduates here, and about 35,000 students all totalled. The school of Communications, considered one of the top programs in broadcasting in the world, operates many amiga 2000's. these 2000's were purchased on the school of Communication's own volition, not by shrewd marketing by C-A. What I would like to know is, a school this size, with its marketability, why doesn't C-A show even any interest in having anybody speak to this school about amigas? IE, should _I_ contact them and inform them of this market, or what?

Well, not really, what I think you should do is contact your local Amiga dealer and make him aware of the excellent opportunity he or she is missing out on. If you don't have a local dealer, I guess your stuck with CBM. If you do decide you want to invest some of your time and efforts, go ahead and give CBM a call. I know this sounds like an excuse, but unfortunatly, CBM is just not yet up to speed on this educational thing yet (I know, marketing in general), and could perhaps use the kick in rear, but from what I gathered at our last usersgroup meeting (with a live CBM rep), they really do want to penetrate the educational market, but they really need to come up to speed on this "new" (to them anyway) type of marketing first. Looks like they are going in the right direction guys, and if we can give them a hand, it may pay off. Remember what Cooperman did for Apple and the educational market, well, it could happen for the Amiga too. thanks for the response, mike. But when you said that "I should contact my local amiga dealer" there are a few problems with that: 1) There are no "local" amiga dealers in Boston. Sounds preposterous, but it's true. The closest dealer is a store called The Memory Location (a large store that does mail order as well) but it is out in Wellesley MA which is about 30-45 minutes by commuter rail, and then a 10 minute walk. It is very difficult to even get there from Boston if you don't have a car. Thus, if a student has a problem with the amiga, he would need to take it there to get it fixed. Unless, 2) The campus bookstore carries Amigas. In which case, the "local Amiga dealer" could not deal with either the store or the school, because then it would be acting as a distributor. Many of the amiga stores (all about a 45 minute radius away, but once you get out that far, there are MANY) fully realize the market. There is another large store that handles mail order as well in Worcester. Thus, the Amiga is a fairly healthy seller at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. But in the city, heck, the power of the campus bookstore is to the degree that it is convincing families to chuck out 3000 bucks for a Mac IIcx for their son or daughter who (the average student) writes 2 papers a year. 3) Also, how many computer stores, no matter what computer they sell, have the financial stability to a)blanket the advertising market, b)send flyers out to a majority of the students both incoming and current, and c)give a large enough "student discount" without having the computer company supply the computers at a discount. I have recently been corresponding though with Howard Diamond, and educational rep for CBM, who has been *most* generous in his mailings to me and his accepting of my comments in return. Two letters were sent to me, and as soon I learn how to POST to this newsgroup (not reply or forward, but post) i will include many of his key points, which I found quite fascinating regarding the marketing of a computer to a school, etc. /\/\ofo "gnew to gnus" mofo@bucsf.bu.edu "the dream is always the same"
