[comp.sys.amiga] Running Dnet 2.10 on Sun 3/xx under OS 3.5/4.0

d88-mbe@sm.luth.se (Michael Bergman) (06/13/90)

I've been struggling with DNet 2.10.13 for a couple of weeks, and have
it running on a Sun 3/50 under OS 3.5 (UNIX 4). By now it works very well,
and is completely stable at 19200 bps.
(Of course I'm using nullmodem cables to do this.)

I have also been doing extensive tests running at 38400 with `7wire` protocol
(handshaking). The result of that is that it is possible to run at transfer
speeds upto 2400 bytes/sec (when the serial port on the Sun is set at 19200
i get approx 1800 bytes/sec), but IT IS NOT STABLE.

Several people did advice me not to run at 38400 (including Matt himself)
because the hardware in the Sun and Amiga wouldn't make it, but since I'm a
stubborn bastard :-) I ran tests myself anyway.

Final conclusion: IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO RUN DNET 2.10 AT SPEEDS > 19200 WITH
ANY REASONABLE RELIABILITY BETWEEN AMIGA AND SUN 3/xx.
(If you have faster hardware, it might very well be possible!)

The good news is that after being in contact with Matt several times, DNet
behaves very well at 19200 and every feature of the system works as expected.
However, the docs are somewhat cryptic to say the least, and I suspect there
are people out there who have tried to make it work but failed.
It is worth the trouble to install DNet - it has 7bit support and transfer
speeds that beats the hell out of zmodem.

So, if you have trouble with DNet, can't get NF0: to work, can't compile it on
your UNIX system, can't login or whatever - feel free to email me with your
questions. Matt is probably busy with DICE these days, so I thought I could
assist him as best I can.

Mike
