[comp.sys.amiga] educational discount plan

amc@lakesys.lakesys.com (Adam Costello) (06/12/90)

Attention everyone, especially Commodore employees!
This is a question that I'm sure everyone would like answered:

My dealer told me today that the educational discount plan ends June 30!
Is this true? If not, what is the true story?

Also, I was surprised to learn that I must pay sales tax even though the
computer would be shipped from out of state. That's $150 on a $3000 purchase!
Is there any way around this?

Thanks much!

Doesn't matter a hell of a lot to me. Our local dealer told me today,
point-blank (which is unusual for this place) that they don't
participate. Maybe in Sun Prairie, I heard second-hand that System Forms
was advertising Amiga on radio. Seeing that the local place has taken
both the 2500 and 3000 off their display floors, I hope System forms
does well.

The dealer near me called Commodore and Commodore said that people out-of-state
do not have to pay the sales tax.

I just called my dealer, and he said that you _do_ have to pay sales tax.
When I told him about the above message, he was surprised and said he would
call Commodore. Can someone from Commodore please post the official policy
on this? Thanks.

The dealer, BTW, was HT Electronics of Sunnyvale, CA.

On the Ed Discount form, it has a listing (I think 5 or so {give or take 2 :-)
}) of states where sales tax is charged. Other than this I don't know anything
else. I'd tell everyone what the states are, but I turned in my form yesterday.

Can you say where? I've looked over the entire form and can't find anything
(except a thing on the front that says "Sales tax is charged and is based
on upon the applicable rate in the state to which the order is shipped.
Please contact your Education Market Specialist for assistance."). If it
helps, the back of the form (lower-left hand corner) has a line that says
RJG/1094:smk (which is presumable the form # or something similar).

First of all, my form has NO info on the back of it (blank).
According to the form I have:

"Sales tax is charged in selected states and is based upon
the applicable rate in the state to which the order is
shipped(**Please note this**). Individual purchases in
CA, IL, GA, PA, and VA must include applicable tax. School
orders in CA must also add applicable tax. Please contact
your Commodore Education Market Specialist for assistance.
All sales are final. Prices, product availability, terms
of the offer, and conditions are subject to change without
notice. Changes to teh Education Purchase Plan are not
	 retroactive."

This should clear some things up. I believe that by *Commodore Education
Market Specialist* they refer to the person in charge of CBM Ed. Disc.
stuff at an authorized Amiga dealer which specialized in the Ed. Disc.
program. BTW, in Florida there is NO sales tax. ;^) :*)

Two things going on here--state laws and something called reciprocity.
Some states (North Carolina, for example) require sales tax on everything
sold whether on the sales floor or through the mail. This is the law in
many states, but few people know about it. Some states have a reciprocity
agreement between them--"you force your vendors to collect our taxes and
we'll force ours to collect yours", thus the "MD,VA,NC,TX residents add x%
sales tax" messages. Most vendors don't bother with it and most consumers
don't know about it and most investigators are too swamped to deal with it,
so most of these taxes go uncollected. At any rate, it is the consumer's
responsibility to pay the state and local sales taxes, so they are generally
out of jurisdiction when done through the mail. Few states are willing to
spend vast resources collecting taxes for other states anyway.

Summary: Commodore gets to set darned little of this "official policy".

It's in the column where you have to add up all the costs and add in the
shipping ($15.00). One line says: Sales Tax (and lists 5 or 6 states which
are required to pay - Indiana not being one of them...)

Hope this helps.

Seems I have a different form. It says sales tax is charged no matter what
state you're in. I did call Commodore, though, and they confirmed that you
have to pay sales tax if the machine is being shipped to: Pennsylvania,
California (weep, cry), Virginia, Georgia, or Illinois.

Well, I guess I'm lucky that I had an old form! I suppose I'll get a letter
in the mail telling me that I need to send more money! :-)

Hear this: We in Europe won't get any discount at all. Why? Because of the
European market structure. Simply stated: If it's not expensive it's not
worth anything. This is especially true for West Germany and Switzerland.
So if they'd offer the A3000 with educational discount, people wouldn't
believe that it's a pro machine...

All of these followups have focused on the Sales Tax issue, which can
only be resolved at each dealer's local level. The other original
question of:
Do the Educational Discounts disappear after June 30?
has so far gone unanswered. Can anyone (such as at Commodore) offer
some valid info on what discounts will be available after the end of
this month? Potential customers want to know!

Depends upon the state. In Kentucky, one would have to pay the sales
tax; the law is specifically written so. For all out-of-state purchases
upon which you do not pay sales tax at the point of origin (like in this
programme), you pay it to the Kentucky government. There's a place for it
on the tax form. They're real creeps about it, too; even things like magazine
subscriptions are supposed to be included.
I've even heard of people being convicted on tax fraud charges when
they left it out.

The form I have doesn't provide a form number, but it came with the May 8th
Price List. At the place where it lists Sales Tax, the fine print says:
Sales tax is charged in selected states and is based on the applicable rate in
the state to which the order is shipped. Individual purchases in CA, IL, GA,
PA and VA must include applicable tax. School orders in CA must also add
applicable tax. Please contact your Commodore Education Market Specialist for

Education Purchace Price are not retroactive.
