Many of them were spurred by an effort to conform to strict biblical interpretations of the world. It seems that there is someplace in the bible where it mentions something a wheel being "thrice fold in circumfrence as it is half high" or some suitable redentation thereof. Thus, these people argued, god has told them that pi=3, and that's that.
