Response to question about foo/bar:
Of course we know that foobar is simply a phonetic representation
of the army acronym 'FUBAR', a Beyond All Recovery extension of 'SNAFU'.
Of more interest is the etymology of the the word 'FOO'.  My
earliest recollection of the word leads me to believe that it was
the name of the file left on a system at DEC containing Edson
DeCastro's letter of resignation to Kenneth Olsen.
The acronym is obvious.
