[comp.sys.amiga] A3000 compatibility

jasonf@cetemp.Eng.Sun.COM (Jason Freund) (06/29/90)

I'm going to get my 3000 in a couple of months.

The biggest question I have about the machine is:
How compatible will it be with my A500's games. I heard that 90%
of non-game software will run. I've already tried F18 and
Hard Drive'n -- they work perfectly.
1) What other games work for sure?
2) Will it be possible to install a 68000|10 (68000/16Mhz) chip to
    get complete compatibility?
3) Is my figure of 90% compatibility for non-games accurate?

Thanks
Jason Freund

BTW, I'm not sure if my above address is accurate. Post your responses
or take a chance that jasonf@cetemp.sun.com works.

I thought they SHOULD have put a 68000 in the 3000, but oh well... I hear
that some games don't work, but I don't know. Ones that do vector graphics,
like F18, Harddrivin', and Stunt Car Racer should work PERFECTLY... But some
weird ones might not. I heard that it was 90% compatible and THAT'S not even
including games... <- Quote from AmigaWorld...

So far, my 3000 has been running 100% on non-game commercial software
(SA4D, PageStream, Lattice C, etc.) and out of the games I've tried,
I have seen about 80% of the NEWER titles work under 2.0 (Budokahn,
TV Sports BBall, etc.). I have run into a snag with UUCP (although
I am using version 1.03 of UUCP) in that it Guru's (Software Failure now
:-() when using 2.0 (using KS 1.3 it works fine). I hope that I can
FTP 1.06 and get that up and running under 2.0 so I can use my home
feed to post soon! One of the most amusing quirks in a game that I've
found was in the old title "Little Computer People" (little ones loved
this one)... My LCP (Jacob) seems to have turned into a LCP (which now
stands for Little Computer Poltergeist!). Everything shows up fine
and you can hear him walking around in the house (although it is now
more like SPRINTING around the house) except Jacob and his dog are
invisible! Pretty Cool... I have a "Little Computer Poltergeist"!

Sorry to disappoint you, but I've been running 1.06D on my A3000 for
a couple of weeks now, and you'll need to run under 1.3 and use NoFastMem
to run uucico, or your machine will crash with an invalidated HD. Just to
warn you before you mess up your HD.

I've talked with Matt about it, we're trying to figure out if it's an
OS problem, or something with his compiler, or both.

There also seems to be a snag when using dnews to read groups with large
numbers of postings (we're talking comp.sys.amiga... :-)) where it doesn't
seem to want to even recognize that the group exists until the message
count gets down to a reasonable number (I had to boost an arrays size up
in anews just to read c.s.a!)
Thanks for the warning about running 1.06 under 2.0!
