The newsgroup net.announce is finally ready to be used. I urge everyone on the net to subscribe to it (even those who have turned off net.general). net.announce is moderated. This means that the news software will prevent posting directly to the newsgroup. All submissions go through a moderator (myself), and things that are really important enough to be read by everybody will be posted. The intent here is to keep the junk off the newsgroup so that people won't be tempted to unsubscribe. It is important to have a mechanism to reach everybody on the net. It is expected that the volume on net.announce will be very low. net.announce is an experimental newsgroup. It is intended to replace net.general, but net.general will continue to exist in its current form. If you have comments or suggestions, please either send them to me via mail, or raise them for discussion in net.news. By the way, to anyone who feels challenged to break the moderation scheme and post unmoderated messages, please don't bother. The scheme is quite simple and you won't have any trouble forging such messages. net.announce was not designed to keep the malicious user off, it was designed to prevent mistakes. To cbosgd!mark (my mailer cant seem to find a path to you) How does one submit something to net.announce ? does one mail to you, or does one submit to net.general and then you pick up the "best" bits and submit them to net.announce. Even if the former is the intended route, I suggest that a limited amount of the latter would not do net.announce any harm. If the former is the only way you will accept, what do you propose to do about people like me who cant get a working path to your machine?
