[comp.sys.amiga] DigiWorks 3D

jol@sei.cmu.edu (Jun Lee) (07/03/90)

Hi.

Has anyone used DigiWorks 3D? If you have what do you think of the product.
I'm thinking of buying it but would like to get some kind of review
from the netters before forking out $85.

 ThanX

Digiworks 3D does a nice job of converting bitmap images to vector format.
It is also quite easy to use. Its only real drawback is no zoom feature.
One additional thing to note, its polygon fill feature is rather good and
can be over 60 times faster than Sculpt-Animate at this task.

Digiworks 3D is one of those programs, to paraphrase my friend Duane, that you
wonder why you paid so much for it because you only use it for 3 minutes at a
time.
It is a handy utility and has saved me hours, if not minutes of work. My
biggest complaint is that there is no 'magnify' option. The program doesn't get
the shapes exactly right the first try and you have to help it along by adding
or deleting or joining points by hand. This can get very tedious when the
points are close together and you can't see that there are two points or three
or seven in a given 1x1 pixel area.
Actually, now that I think about it more, the algorythms that figure out what
shape the 2D image is are pretty dumb. They may be the best you can possibly
get on a computer until artificial intelligence steps onto this particular
scene, though. It's unfortunate. Up here in Canada we are paying $175.00Can for
this program and if I'd known then the amount of work it was going to save me,
I would have bought a year's supply of Sensation ice cream bars instead.

There is a new program out, called Pixel 3d, that does the same type of
thing that DigiWorks 3D does. It outputs to TurboSilver, Sculpt,
VideoScape, and DXF format. Of the things I have run through it, it has
done a __VERY__ clean job on the conversion. My biggest complaint is how
it handles memory, though. You tell it an allocation factor and goes and
uses that to grab a chunk of memory at the beginning and thus does not have
to check out of memory errors all the time. However, even at its largest
allocation I can overflow it quite easily.
