Commodore is NOT an American-based company and that might
have been the reason for the lack of inclusion. You might also
have noticed that Commodore hasn't been very profitable recently!
BTW, the former is the reason that Commodore isn't listed
in the Fortune 500, whereas Atari was (they dropped out this past
year). Commodore would be around 400th.

While you're right about Commodore not being included in this list and in the
F500 because it's not a US based company, you're wrong about C= not being
profitable.

At our last user group meeting, our guest speaker was the district educational
sales manager for Commodore, based in Dallas. He comes from NCR and turned
down IBM to work for Commodore! He stated that C= is a STRONG company,
stronger than most people think since they base success on how a company does
on Wall Street...success there is paper and nothing else.

Gunda, I guess this is the quote. Now I remember.
Apparently you misunderstood. Commodore is currently
reporting very low profits, only around $5 million versus about
$45 million for the prior year. Commodore's sales are also down
by almost $80 million/yr. However much of the reason for lower
profits is that Commodore is investing far more money in
development and marketing than they used to.
This person may have said how strong Commodore is, but
don't forget that he is an EMPLOYEE. I'm not saying that
Commodore is on its way to bankruptcy. According to its numbers
it has a good asset/liability ratio. However it may not be a very
profitable company for 1-3 years. If by that time profitability
isn't getting better it may never improve. Of course, we here
(except Marc Barrett 8) envision a rosy future for the Amiga.

Ok, I see your point...

He said nothing about profits, just that they were something like a billion
dollar strong company.

And you're right about my outlook...with the success of the A3000, the
impending success of CDTV, and the growing awareness of the Amiga in general,
I see alot of good things happening.

But, there are still some things that would make things easier, like CMOS
coprocessors that can handle more colors, and 16bit sound. They've got the OS
cleaned up and professional looking...it'd be nice if some SERIOUS
applications were either ported or created...you know, like 1-2-3, WINGZ,
Mathmatica, FrameMaker, and RenderMan.

Harry Copperman has stated on many occasions that they
are working on methods to improve colors/resolution that aren't
just patches on top of the current system. It didn't sound like
the UofL board was what he was referring to.

Since Dave Haynie said, in his conference on the A3000 (plink), that any
coprocessor upgrades would be on a card, I got to wondering...

The only part of the A3000's motherboard that isn't 32bit is the little
section that's got the original chips on it...I wonder if it can be turned
off, either by hardware or through software so that the new chips on a card
could take over their functions???
