[ "Send lawyers, guns, and money ..." ] I was just on the Lattice BBS checking for any new "fixes" to v5.05. The following banner msg is now displayed when you log on: "Effective IMMEDIATELY, ELECTRONIC support for the Lattice AmigaDOS C compiler is only available on the BIX network. AmigaDOS C development and technical support is being assumed by SAS Institute Inc. Until the transition is complete, support will not be offered over the LBBS. Information on BIX can be gotten by calling 1-800-227-2983. Live happily, Carlotta " BTW, there was one new (post v5.05 fixes file) item for the Amiga in the fixes section: Name Date Product Description ============= ========= ========= =================================== FPINIT.ARC 06/29/90 Amiga C Source to fpinit, allows precision 1,679 BYTES 5.0X and rounding parameter for 68881. This is a small source file which allows the setting of the precision and rounding parameters on 68881 coprocessors. If you grab this, you might want to chop off all the damned CR's from the end of each line in the fpinit.c file ... sheesh ...! /kim -- UUCP: kim@uts.amdahl.com -OR- ked01@juts.ccc.amdahl.com or: {sun, decwrl, hplabs, pyramid, uunet, oliveb, ames}!amdahl!kim DDD: 408-746-8462 USPS: Amdahl Corp. This is REALLY great for those who do not have access to BIX. I have just spent AUS$400 on their DevSystem, and am somewhat angered by this news. Does anyone know the fully story, like why Lattice is doing this and when they will be back in operation. How long is this "transition" going to take? How long is this "transition" > going to take? Lattice isn't doing this. It sounds like all the work of Lattice's parent company SAS, Inc. This is both good news and bad news. The good news is that the more recent versions of the Lattice 'C' compiler were developed not by Lattice but by SAS's 68000 compiler group (John Toebes), as far as I know. The bad news is that apparently SAS made this move on the spur of the moment with out any plans on how they were going to support their product in the future. As happy as I've been with their compiler, it still might be time to try another one. :-( ---Mike, -- A man said to the Universe "Sir, I exist!" | Michael Figg DSAC-FSD "However," replied the Universe, | DLA Systems Automation Center "The fact has not created in me a | Columbus, Ohio sense of obligation."- Stephen Crane | mfigg@dsac.dla.mil CIS: 73777,360

This is a situation that has been brewing for years. Because of bad decisions at Lattice and an inability of the MSDOS group at SAS to deliver a marketable compiler Lattice has been a losing proposition for SAS for some time. As for SAS, they have quite an extensive world-wide distribution and support organization, and their manufacturing facilities include their own printing facilities and video production studios. I have no doubt that they will be able to provide satisfactory support. -- John Meissen .............................. Why are people whinning about BIX being expensive when they dont know what they are talking about? The gent from Australia, I can understand. But for anyone in the US... you can get a flat rate BIX account. The charges would work out to something like $33 a month. This includes BIX plus off peak communications charges. This is for an UNLIMITED use account. You can use it from 7PM - 7AM with no additional charges. This beats the pants over the slow and over priced CI$ at $12.50 an HOUR!! Hell, 3 lousy hours on CI$ would pay for a whole MONTH of UNLIMITED use of BIX. Plus BIX is an official support spot for CBM. I am in no way connected with BIX, just a happy member... and an unhappy member of CI$. - Doug - Doug_B_Erdely@Cup.Portal.Com

All I was complaining about was the possibility of paying for another service besides GEnie (which I don't use anymore anyway) and CIS. How do the BIX general forums compare to CIS, specifically those pertaining to travel and music? How extensive are the Amiga libraries? Is there a good navigational utility, like Whap! on CIS, which will let me read and respond to messages offline since I'm alittle limited by the 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM time frame because I leave for work early and therefore go to bed early? I'm all ears, the price sounds good. ---Mike, -- A man said to the Universe "Sir, I exist!" | Michael Figg DSAC-FSD "However," replied the Universe, | DLA Systems Automation Center "The fact has not created in me a | Columbus, Ohio sense of obligation."- Stephen Crane | mfigg@dsac.dla.mil CIS: 73777,360

OK... I have gotten a good portion of E-Mail... mostly asking about BIX.. so here is the info for BIX... 1. Bix charges $39 per quarter, or $2.00 per hour. 2. You can get a BIX Tymenet Account that lets you call bix as much as you want between 7PM-7AM (I think these times are correct) weekdays, 24 hours on the weekend and legal holidays (as per Tymenet), for a FLAT $20 a month. There are NO additional charges as long as you call within the alloted time frame. 3. Bix has a VERY active Amiga message area... as just about *ALL* Amiga developers are online plus Commodore themeselves. 4. Bix has an OK file library. It was really non-existent about a year ago, but since they have gone flat rate... the software area has exploded... I think there are almost 2,000 files online now. And growing FAST! PLUS, they support Z-Modem downloading. I cant really speak about some of the other areas on BIX... but all the ones I have been in are very active. Here is BIX's toll free customer service no... anyone wishing further info should call them for details. It is 1-800-227-2983. They answer from 8:30 AM - 11:00PM weekdays. This number will work in Canada too. Its also the number customers can call with questions or problems. Outside of the US or Canada (or in New Hampshire) 1-603-924-7681. I am in *NO* way connected to BIX, other than a happy customer! - Doug - Doug_B_Erdely@Cup.Portal.Com

For those PC Pursuiters out there, you can also get to BIX by connecting to BOSTON and dialing the local number there: 861-9769. At least, it works for me.
