The KAL airliner incident was a great tragedy, but one aspect of the incident started my rather morbid imagination working. Apparently KAL007, a gigantic aluminum machine making no attempts to hide itself, spent over 2 hours in Soviet airspace before it was located visually. The Soviets don't seem to be very good at interception... I propose an annual "Trans-USSR Air Rally", where private pilots load up their fiberglass-bodied Lear jets (or perhaps even Piper Cubs!) with extra fuel tanks and radar countermeasures, then fly across the Soviet Union. Prizes would be awarded for time duration, depth of penetration, and distance travelled. Extra points for eluding pursuers, or landing to acquire souvenirs. No high-resolution camera gear or weapons allowed. If the planes were properly "stealthed", the risk may not be too high. One of the larger risks could be coming back across the border into US controlled airspace, but smugglers manage to do it. Besides this being very dangerous and in violation of international law, any technical suggestions? Preferred routes/times/strategies? Extra point activities? Suggested prizes? It's fun to think about without actually doing it!
