[comp.sys.amiga] Sharp JX-100/Scanlab

a72@mindlink.UUCP (Raman Anand) (07/21/90)

I'm planning on purchasing the SHARP JX-100 scanner with Scanlab100/ASDG
(Amiga2000). I would like to know how good is this package? I would also like
to know if I can use JX-100 with my 386/25 and if so what software would I
need?

I've seen SHARP ads in several publications indicating that
the hardware comes complete with software for Amiga,IBM and
MAC. Does this mean that every JX-100 package contains software
for all three computers?

Lastly, where (BBS or Networks) can I find sample Scanlab/JX-100
pictures in 640+ x 400+ in HAM resolution? I would like to find
out how good the pictures are in this resolution before I invest.

I wrote a 3-way comparison article (DigiView, PP&S FrameGrabber and
Scanlab100/JX100) which was published in "AX Magazine" #3.1 (March 1990
issue with a model wearing a black hat on the cover). Try to find it
and read it. I've used all three products extensively and they all have
things to recommend them (depending on your needs) - my conclusion was
that the JX100 is a wonderful thing if you can afford it and understand
its limitations (these limitations mainly being the large amount of RAM
required to scan at higher resolutions, the size of the actual
available scanning area (4"x6.4") and the slowness of the scanner when
operating in 200dpi mode (appx 10 minutes to make three passes for
color of the full scanning area) but the advantages of this product and
the kind of results it delivers far outweigh these few shortcomings.

Yes you could use the same JX100 with your 386/25... read on

No. It means that it comes with Amiga *OR* IBM *OR* Mac inteface
cable and software, but not with all three in one package. If you bought
the Amiga "version" of the scanner (which usually comes in two taped-
together boxes, the scanner in one box, and ASDG's ScanLab/100 software,
manual, and interface cable in another box) then somehow you'd need
to buy the IBM software (which runs under MS Windows by the way)
in order to use the same scanner with your PeeCee. I don't know how
you'd go about doing this... if Perry's Usenet connectivity is back
in business now perhaps he could fill you in.

You'll find dozens of JX-100;/ScanLab100 pictures in the Graphics
library of the Amiga Zone on American People/Link. I've created and
uploaded many and so have other JX100 owners. I've uploaded pix in
many different modes of color and resolution, but my ffavorite mode
has turned out to be 640x400 16-color hi-res. The ScanLab/100 software
has wonderfully intelligent dithering routines in it and you'd be
astounded at what you can do with 16 colors if you dither well.
