[comp.sys.amiga] JR Comm 1.0 comments...

amhartma@silver.ucs.indiana.edu (Andy Hartman - AmigaMan) (07/19/90)

Well, I've run JR-Comm 1.0 once. And what I don't like about it (and many
others from what has been posted) is the screen telling you to register.

I understand that Mr. Radigan wishes people to register their copy of JR-Comm
but the frequency with which it is displayed little seems short of bullying.
(Extortion was a bit strong...).

I like JR-Comm and have used .94 ALOT! (just wanted everyone to know that I'm
not all bad!)

Now, has anyone else noticed any probs in VT-100 mode? My problem is:

When I fire up JRC in VT-100 mode, I lose some stuff. Mainly, the editor I use
on my UNIX box matches parenthesis automatically. When I'm running JRC, and
the editor matches parenthesis, the parenthesis and everything between
disappears. I was hoping that the VT-100 emulation was going to be perfect.
It looks like I still have to keep 2 term. programs so I can use the editor
on my UNIX box.

Also, my editor (emacs, if it makes a difference) has an inverse (color on
white) status bar that displays the name of the file, how much is displayed,
etc. In all color-modes (WB, 4, 8, 16, etc.) this doesn't show up right. The
best it gets is when I go to 4 colors or less and then I get just a status
bar displayed normally (not inverse). I have screwed around with the palatte
but have gotten nowhere. I realize that this isn't a problem w/JRC, but would
appreciate it if someone sent me a jr-comm.def file which will help.

Thanks,
AMH

All Jack wants is some kind of return out of his work. Do you have a clue
about what kind of time it takes to put out something like JR-Comm ? If
you use JR-Comm on a regular basis, and you're sick of the "screen telling you
to register", then register! In fact, if you choose to use JR-Comm, you're
obligated to do so.

Used it "ALOT", eh.. Did you register it ?

I use "vi" all the time here on our Sun 3 with the "showmatch" feature enabled.
Never had a problem. Make sure you have your terminal type set to vt100,
and that you have a good vt100 termcap entry.

If you still have problems, play around with the Terminal requester. I think
you may have to turn off destructive backspace or something. (although I'm
sure showmatch uses cursor positioning and not backspaces.) There's probably
some setting which you have wrong on your end or the Unix end.

[emacs stuff deleted. Havn't tried it in >2 color mode]

Have you actually counted the frequency with which it is displayed? Every
17th time isn't repulsive to the point of being unusable, but it was meant
to annoy you. If it is, then it means that you're using it enough to warrent
registering it. If you don't wish to register than you'll have to live with
it.

FYI, The CompuServe program Whap! does this *everytime* you change to a
different area, try it for awhile and you'll appreciate why I didn't do the
same for JR-Comm. But, I *did* want to get the point across just the same...

Hmm, vi does fencepost matching on the system I call as well, the text doesn't
dissappear though. Could you capture and isolate the ANSI sequences used for
the matching on your system so that I can examine them?

Hmm, sounds like you may have been using a gamma version of JR-Comm somewhere
along the line. If so, reinstall the fonts.lzh file, the VT100 fonts changed
for 1.0.

You may have already thought of this, but: go into the options menu
(can't remember which one offhand - I've just gotten the demo) and change
the backspace to NON-destructive. It defaults to a destructive backspace,
and would very probably cause the screen "glitch" you're seeing. I was
having similar problems testing it in VI yesterday until I remembered "Hey!
The backspace is destructive!" I flipped it to non-destructive and all was
well...

PS: Jack, have you gotten my mail in ref: new opening screen?
