Also, what price range >would it be for an Amiga to run such -> software? I have been experimenting with a video editing system from Interactive MicroSystems, Inc., Haverhill, MA (508-372-0400). By experimenting, I mean I bought the package, but am not yet proficient enough with it to determine whether it will meet my needs. In a nutshell, it reads VCR pulses into the Amiga (through the joystick port) and controls VCR's, LaserDiscs, CD players, etc through infra-red remote control. You can create edit decision lists of 1,000+ in and out points (with descriptors of each scene); re-order them; include/exclude scenes; then once you are happy with the list, let the software control the whole editing process. The software/hardware is being worked on and upgraded constantly--upgrades free so far. The people behind the product have been very helpful with telephone support. Apparently they are working on a SMPTE writer/reader version which would give us the accuracy every editor dreams of. I don't think this will be a free upgrade. So far, using Hi-8 equipment, I have found the infr-red system it to be reasonably accurate e.g. +/- 15 frames. The vendor suggests when set up properly, that sould come down to +/- 2 or 3 frames. As you can see, I'm still experimenting. For a much more thorough review, try Vol 3 Issue 1 of THE AMIGA SENTRY. P.S. I am in no way affiliated with the vendor...just a reasonably happy user.
