I am planning to buy a modem soon and would like to hear any comments (good or bad) which people have about the various inexpensive 2400 baud modems (especially Supra & Progressive Peripherals). If you have any experience with such modems and have a comment about their reliability/unreliability I would like to hear it. Please mail the response directly to me rather than responing to this Usenet posting since I had someone else post it for me. Thanks, Bill Dimm DIMM@ANLPNS.BITNET DIMM@ANLPNS.PNS.ANL.GOV

If you I know advertising is a net-no-no but I have seen many requests for cheap 2400 baud modems come and go. I am also sorry to see many fellow Amiga users pay rediculous prices for SupraModems. We (Copper Elctronics Inc.) have been selling affordable, good quality modems for over a year and a half now. We previously sold thousands of Maxon (of the CB and radar dector fame) 2400baud modems until they were discontinued by the manufacturer. We currently sell the EMERSON (of the home electronic fame) 2400 baud modem. It is very reliable, fully Hayes compatible, has sturdy metal case (looks like a Hayes), smart/dumb mode, Asynchronous/Synchronous. We sell these modems (as seen in our Computer Shopper Ads) for $79.00 !!!! Again, sorry for the advertisment (NO FLAMES PLEASE it wont happen again!) Plus they just lowered their retail so expect even further reduction of street price. I've used the Supra for well over a year now with absolutely no problems (which is more than I can say for my previous true blue Hayes) >Again, sorry for the advertisment (NO FLAMES PLEASE it wont happen again!) [lotsa stuff about how great his product is deleted, along with Supra-bash] That sounds like, gee, I'm really sorry I'm beating you with this bat! It won't happen again! A friend of mine who's a GVP dealer >didn't know< that it was inappropriate to post prices here, and he got flamed viciously for weeks. You posted that YOU KNOW IT'S WRONG, BUT YOU'RE JUST GONNA DO IT THIS ONE TIME, and you expect people to be nice to you. You also cast aspersions on a product that you obviously aren't familiar enough with, when you know full well that the company that makes it can't respond here. I bought my Supra Modem 2400 at the World of Commodore show in Philly back in November of '88. It came with a cable, was fairly new on the market, and cost $135. The only times I've even >suspected< it of causing a problem turned out to be that I had a bad binary of my term (Online!_Platinum == good term) the first time, and that the phone company had two bare wires touching each other outside my house the second time. In other words, 20 months later, I've got a product that works as well as the day I bought it. I don't know of any other product that I can say the same of, including Ami (mounse had to be replaced). /******************************************************************** * All of the above copyright by the below. * * Bill Cavanaugh uunet!tronsbox!bleys * * "You can only be young once, but you can be immature forever." * * Larry Anderson * ********************************************************************/ I am in no way affiliated with Supra... this has been a testimonial from a satisfied customer.

I have to put in my $0.02 worth on this one, guys.... I bought an Emerson 2400 baud (external) from a local mail-order/walk-in place for $85. I could probably have found it for less, but I didn't have to pay shipping.... Not only does this have your standard Hayes, non-volatile RAM, dialtone/busy/voice detection, but it's also in an aluminum (NOT PLASTICC!) case. It also has a neat little button that works the same as typing ATH1 or ATH0 (it does the opposite of the current state) on the front. Of course, I don't have MNP 4 or 5, or any of that fancy stuff, but neither does any computer I call, so what use would it be? (One should think, "Sure I have a possible throughput of XXXX baud, but how many systems can I use that with?") I don't think I could have bought a better 2400 baud modem for less than $250. The only better 2400 I've seen was a USR, and we can all guess why I didn't buy THAT one. :-) The fact is, I got a great modem at a great price.... I have to recommend this modem to anyone who wants a simple, _reliable_ 2400 baud modem. I am only affiliated with Emerson in that I am a satified customer... ..greg... ___ Disclaimer: The opinions expressed above are not my own, but AMIGA! //// the property of some higher-up power, to which I am only a tool. //// "Welcome, my son.
