Maybe I can't read, but this conclusion doesn't follow from the list
below. To wit :
->>M5880 Macintosh Plus w/Keyboard, 1 Mb RAM ................... 649.00
This is the same as the _List_ price for an A500 + Keyboard + 1MB of RAM.
The Educational price has got to be better than this, _and_ you get color
instead of mono.
->>M0028LL/A Macintosh SE Hard Disk 20 CPU.......................... 1089.00
Is this less than an A500 w/A590 Hard Disk 20 ?
->>M5660 Macintosh IIcx CPU 1Mb ................................ 2848.00
This is less than the A3000 ? I thought the A3000 was $2500 on the discount
plan. And it comes with an extra MB of memory.
->>MACINTOSH SE/II KEYBOARDS
->>M0116 Apple Keyboard......................................... 95.00
->>M0115 Apple Extended Keyboard................................ 165.00
And don't forget you need a keyboard too.
So how do you come up with "And they're cheaper?"

You aren't considering that the Macs COME with the screen built in. And although a color monitor is nice for most people (who buy on Educ. Disc.) the Apple monochrome is just fine. It DOESN'T flicker and looks very solid. The price for an A500 w/1MB, 2 drives, monitor and 20MB is $1,369. This makes the Mac $280 cheaper. I'd say that at that price the SE/20 will be the most sold Mac (on discount that is). An equivalent Amiga is much more. The Plus system listed is $150 less without the second floppy. Seeing as the plus is way out of date and is monochrome, it's not too serious compitition. Of coures, Macintosh's have been big sellers even at much higher prices, I doubt Commodore is in for a whitewashing. I would like to see a reaction from Commodore, though. Does Apple still buy their chips from Commodore? Anyone have a price on the A500P? As for the "Mac Classic", I think that most of the sales for that machine will come from prospective Mac SE buyers, which are higher ticket items. The only way Apple could sell a low end machine to compete with the A500 is if had the apeal the Amiga has, i.e. color graphics. Apple has demonstrated that they cannot produce a machine with resonable color for anywhere near the A500's price. The A500 will hook into a monochrome monitor just fine. You can get a fine monochrome monitor for about $70. Probably less for a 9" monochrome monitor. There's also very little reason to include a second floppy if you have the hard disk. Most Amigas and Mac I've seen with hard drives don't bother with a second floppy drive. In-Reply-To: message from cmcmanis@stpeter.Eng.Sun.COM Also...who says the Amiga has to be the cheapest machine out there? Cheaper than their color systems, sure...that almost goes without saying. But so what if it costs a little more for an A500 than it does for a Mac Plus. The the Plus (and the SE for that matter) don't have color...they don't have a 13" display...they don't multitask...they don't have coprocessors to speed things up (so an A500 is considerably faster than either of the two Macs)...and their memory can't be upgraded as easily as the A500. Which will do better word processing: a Macintosh with Microsoft Word or an Amiga 500 in either x200 mode (with scan lines visible) or in x400 mode that flickers like anything? Most people will want the Mac, especially at $150 less. How about the 40MB SE? I am actively trying to get Amigas into Columbia but I will only be able to reach niche groups unless prices come down compared to Apple. Your point that the Plus is old technology doesn't mean much, as it still runs MS Word and all the other basic programs. It lacks color, but that isn't a big deal for most uses they'll put it to. Finally, for those students who need more scientific programs: they aren't even available on the Amiga! The Mac has far more and far better science/math/computer software available for it. Finally2, and honestly, most students pirate from anyone they can, so Amiga software being cheaper is irrelevant. It is more expensive usually, because there aren't as many Amiga friends to trade with and they'll HAVE to buy it. As I mentioned initially, I wouldn't change my computer for the world (well maybe...), but we should realize that low end Macs now have an advantage. The Amiga is trying to upset the leader. The biggest advantage used to be price. Apple got smart and lowered the prices on their low-end models, while keeping the expensive ones high. > > -------- > F. An Amiga 500 with a monochrome monitor doesn't flicker either because the persistence of the monitor is somewhat greater than that of the color monitors. I can get a "mac equivalent" resolution mono monitor for $80. And I'll still have better screen resolution (640 X 440 versus 512 X 344) So what is the point? The point is this is a stupid comparison. In-Reply-To: message from es1@cunixb.cc.columbia.edu When you consider HD space to HD space, and RAM to RAM, maybe the Mac is cheaper, but for the graphic arts student we need the sound and VIDEO capabilities for small scale video production. The Amiga is then cheaper due to it's built in goodies. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProLine: DanB20@pro-graphics ************************ UUCP: ...crash!pro-graphics!DanB20 * Daniel G. It is true that the price has come down on it (thank God) to $409, so the prices I quoted were off by $110. I still believe my point is valid, although somewhat tempered by this. BTW, the Mac Plus and SE do come with keyboards at the quoted prices, that isn't extra. Admittedly color is desirable for many instances, but not all. I think the advantage of a non-flickering screen far outweighes the disadvantages of black and white. Also, while we're discussing advantages inherent to a system, the fact that the Macintosh is a compact and portable unit is a plus. I hope Commodore is hard at work finding a way to put the new display-enhancer chip of the A3000 into the other models. Yes, poor MicroWay will suffer, but it will do too much for the Amiga not to do so. You have to consider that not being the standard lowers your value, so there have to be several other things to make up for that. In summary, the positive points for an A500 bundle system with A590 are: color, multitasking, better games, extra floppy, better expandability. Advantages of the Macintosh: sharp display without flicker, portable, standard, higher-quality software, more science software, better support due to more people having familiarity with hardware, computer's future is more solid, better reputation, no Irving Gould running the show 8^>. Those are the main things to consider. The two systems are within about $100 of each other. I think that most people will go for the Mac, unless they are more into games or like playing around with their computer. I think someone just defined a new acronym, IMAO. I think that fits! 8^> -- Ethan Ethan Solomita: es1@cunixb.cc.columbia.edu "If Commodore had to market sushi they'd call it `raw cold fish'" -- The Bandito, inevitably stolen from someone else
