[comp.sys.amiga] RFC: Lots of graphics RAM and the Atari TT.

U3364521@ucsvc.ucs.unimelb.edu.au (Lou Cavallo) (07/29/90)

G'day,

has anyone read the specs of the Atari TT? There is a specific feature I'd
like to see some _useful_ discussion on wrt the Amiga. Okay? :-)

{BTW I'd include the specs but I can't recall where I stored them. :-(}

Firstly, for any Atari-ists reading this message, congratulations Atari! I
am not an Atari owner by the way (Amiga 1000 actually). Anyway ...

The Atari TT {according to specifications posted by Atari NZ, with several
errors regarding the Amiga 3000 and Macintosh machine I might add. :-(} is
capable of using 8 Megs of graphics RAM. Although the TT does not use any
blitter (I don't know why only that was mentioned) that generous amount of
graphics RAM seems to be advantageous for graphics work.

{Please, can a knowledgeable Atari-ist help explain the graphics system?}

My question. Is an Amiga graphic RAM alotment(sp?) of 1 or 2 Megs capable
enough for the near future in the video/animation/multi-media market?

Perhaps this move by Atari is showing the way in multi-media developments
hardware wise? {And no I'm not thinking of SGI class machines. :-)}

Caveats: I can imagine cross comparisons b/w systems (for example the TT &
the Amiga 3000) discussing the merits / demerits of graphics co-processors
with an Amiga system compared to whatever the Atari TT uses (68030 only?).
I'd rather not preempt any discussion so I won't offer my AUS $0.02...yet!

{Finally, I'm not cross-posting this question to an Atari group because I
am not one of those Amigans that post into their newsgroups to start wars.
As a consequence I expect that fewer Atari-ists may read this than should
do. I hope some Atari-ists can help out 'though.}

To Dave Haynie: I wasn't aware until I saw your posting that the Atari TT
VME bus was 16 bit. Presuming that you have had time {:-)} to think about
the TT design then I'd like to ask what you think of the design.

yours truly,
Lou Cavallo. {the multi-theist :-)}

In my previous article <875@ucsvc.ucs.unimelb.edu.au> I write

  A followup in comp.sys.atari.st points out that AtariNZ claims to have not
  written the article (with the errors of comparison). It appears to be some
  information from an Atari-ist publication.

> Perhaps this move by Atari is showing the way in multi-media developments

  This remains to be seen it seems.

> yours truly,

  I wish to apologise if I have inadvertently spread any misinformation. It
  was definitely not my intention but quite the opposite in fact! :-(

  If anyone knows the official story and can divulge said same please do so.
