Can somebody please fill me in on the current status of the Macintosh emulator for the Amiga? Is there a new version coming out that will work on the 3000? Is it really 100% software compatible? -- Steve Sigmond sigmond@portia.stanford.edu "It's like, how much blacker could B.BOTHERSQUAD@macbeth.stanford.edu this be? The reason that AMax doesn't work with the A3000 is simple -- the A3000 uses some underhanded MMU code to load its ROMs. When the ROMs actually come out in their more natural chip form. Amax doesn't know about this MMU code, and gets confused. The same problems crop up when using setCPU to load the ROM into 32bit memory. Wait till Sept when both the A3000 comes with real ROMs, and the new AMax is out (cross your fingers on both accounts). As to 100% compatibility -- of course not. terminal programs, Appletalk, MIDI, sound programs all don't work. The usual DTP-type programs do-- which is the MAC's strongpoint. -David Navas navas@sim.berkeley.edu Ignore the Reply-to line, though that is forwarded to my account, currently... > >-- >Steve Sigmond sigmond@portia.stanford.edu >"It's like, how much blacker could B.BOTHERSQUAD@macbeth.stanford.edu > this be? Terminal programs work fine (although I'm not sure why. :-) ) However, David is correct in that Appletalk, MIDI and sound programs don't function under the current version of A-Max. Ads for A-Max II claim that Appletalk and sound programs will work when it is released this fall. >>-- >>Steve Sigmond sigmond@portia.stanford.edu > -David Navas >navas@sim.berkeley.edu --John Lee ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The crew trapped by deadly MMU's! I've never had a problem running a terminal program under AMAX. Programs that use sound work, you just don't get the sound. So if the program's main function is to process and produce sounds it's useless under AMAX. But if sound is just an incidental feature the rest of the program works OK. --Fabbian Dufoe 350 Ling-A-Mor Terrace South St. Petersburg, Florida 33705 813-823-2350 UUCP: fgd3@jc3b21.UUCP ...uunet!pdn!jc3b21!fgd3

The Amax II is due out in the fall. It is a card based systems for the Amiga 2000+ cpu's. It allows full compatiblity including networking, sound (yes, even digitized sounds) all your ram, and all your processors's speed. It will even read/write mac disks with standard amiga drives!!!! No price has been announced as far as I have heard..... Duane Fields

Also, Amax II comes with two serial ports on it, one Rs232 and the other the infamous "AppleTalk" port. At least this was the impression I was getting from the ad I saw... Kurt "Koleman" Koller - amdahl!bungia!orbit!pnet51!koleman

I just received an upgrade offer from Readysoft, and what you are refering to seems to be what Readysoft is calling Amax II Plus. This plus version comes as a Zorro II card, on which the 128K mac roms are place, and includes 2 Mac serial ports. On our macs, Appletalk is connected over the Printer serial port, so this apparently would give you appletalk access. Alas, Amax II Plus is said to be only "under development" by ReadySoft and a Fall 1990 delivery. (BTW it also provides the ability to R/W mac disks in Amiga drives.) The version 2 software supports 68020, 68030, Hard disks partitions, Mac digitized sounds, and easier file transfers. 64K ROMS ARE NO LONGER SUPPORTED. For the upgrade ReadySoft wants $49.95 ($59.95 CDN) +$5 S/H. Note: this will be applied toward the upgrade to II plus once it is available. Sounds good to me! I just recieved the upgrade information for A-MAX II. It (the softw.) will be shipping at the end of July. They want you to send a $50 upgrade fee. This will also entitle you to a reduced rate to upgrade to the AMAX II Plus hardware. Here's a listing of what you supposedly can do with the new soft. 1) Greater compatibility with 68030 systems inc. A3000 2) Hard Drive Support (via a partition) 3) Sound support (yes internal mac sound) 4) ECS support (640x480, 640x960 and Moniterm/2024 support 100x800) 5) SCSI peripheral support (yes virigina you can plug in a MAC CD ROM) 6) WB2.0 compatibility 7) A mac side utility for file transfer between Amigados, which will support conversion of popular file formats. AMAX II PLUS (WHAT THE Hardware upgrade does) 1) fits in an A2000/2500/3000 slot 2) gives you an Apple talk, printer and modem port (for midi) 3) interfaces with your Amiga drives to write and read direct to mac disks. That's the story Hopefully it's helpful Thanks, donb q

Hello, the suggestion for a Mac Term program I would suggest under A-MAX is a nice SHAREWARE program called ZTERM, which has emulation, Zmodem etc. Also, AMAX II is coming out which does sound and hard drives. My upgrade noticed promised software upgrade shipment in July (last week) .
