I've started having some severe problems with Populous. It worked fine on the first 3 worlds (1,4,7), but when I got to world 11 problems began. The first thing I noticed was that several words were missing from the beginning screen, i.e. WATER IS _______. I rebooted the machine, tried again, and I got the initial screen correctly. About halfway into the game, I clicked on the zoom to knight icon. The screen was filled with knights (I only had 1), my people fighting the other people (I had no people there), and brown vertical bars were all over the screen. The garbage even started trashing the icon controls in the bottom right corner. I clicked the zoom to leader icon, and everything went back to normal. I repeated this several times and got garbage everytime. So, I decided to try to finish the game and not click on that icon. I found the same trashed screens as I went to the enemy territory. Then my cursor started working erratically. Finally, the game just stopped, although the music continued in the background, none of the controls did anything. Has anyone else had these problems with Populous? Stuart Pierce

I had to remove my CSA 030/Dragstrip to get Populus to run, I know that sounds drastic for a game but I think it is worth it. I have not done anything productive since I started playing it. I am up to Nimihill the first ice world. I was unable to run it on an A2500 in 020 mode but ran fine in 68000, It does not work on a CSA Midget or the Ronin Cards. I called EA and they verified that the programmer knows it works only on 68000's. I asked if they planned to do an upgrade and the guy did not know. I planned to call EA again on wednesday and flame them a little more for being incompatible. BTW I think the game is excelent and is great to play, The graphics are fantastic and all the things going on make it a different game every time. The only complaint I have other than not being compatible, is response time on raising or lowering the ground or selecting attributes, it's somewhat slow and can get confused as to the actual position of the curser when the left mouse button is pressed, This would be taken care of if I could use it on the othirty 2620 or anything else with thirtytwo bit memory. I hear that it can be made to work on these processors with a program called "superdecigel". If anyone knows where this can be had and if it is PD like the original Decigel then please Email me. -- ******* Rick Unland Commodore Business Machines **************************** * Usenet: uunet!cbmvax!unland ARPA: cbmvax!unland!@uunet.UU.NET * * Standard Disclaimer: If I said it, I was drunk! * * If I didn't say it, I wasn't drunk enough! * * "I thought they said the Commodore could stand up to anything!" * *********************************************** Earth Girls Are Easy! **********

Sure ! Populous has been available in France for a few monthes already. It's definitely a must. I don't remember reading a posting about the two-player mode. I tried this one, with a 2400bps modem, and it works just fine. We were able to finish the game, without getting ever desynchronized. You can exchange messages with your opponent. You can save game and start back later. Concerning the game playability, there is a light drawback. The levels (there are 500 of them) are not really progressive. Some levels around 80 are much more difficult to play than later levels. --Francois -- *- Francois Rouaix // We are all prisoners here, * *- rouaix@inria.inria.fr \X/ of our own device * *- SYSOP of Sgt. Has anyone tried Populous on a 2500 ? I just got it and even with FastMem off it won't run. I get the title screen and it will run the demo but after choosing the game type it cleasrs the screen and goes out to lunch. 8-( -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Rob Gabbard (uunet!sdrc!evgabb) _ /| Workstation Systems Programmer \'o.O' Structural Dynamics Research Corporation =(___)= U =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Jerry Pournelle mentions having this same problem in his October Chaos Manor article. I usually don't read BYTE, but there was a posting about this article because Mr. Pournelle was talking semi-favorably about the Amiga. Anywho, you need to use the 68000 fallback mode to run Populous. When the Amiga starts booting, hold down both mouse buttons and the CPU selection screen will appear. Choose 68000 (instead of 68020 or UNIX) and the machine will boot up without the 68020 and without the 2 megs of 32 bit memory that it uses. The game should work now. Maybe there will be an update to the game to fix this bug since the game should work on all Amigas. Hope this is helpful, and sorry to post to comp.sys.amiga, but mail bounced... I can't get Populous to run on my A3000 on either 1.3 OR 2.0! It ran fine on my A2000 under 1.3. Is the 68030 the culprit here? Is there a workaround for getting it going? Thanks in advance, Shannon Lawson (No .signature)

If EA makes a version that is not copy-protected, or if there is a way to launch the program from Workbench then you could use the CPU NOCACHE option, that worked for me with Dr T's music software. Look at the self-running demo in the beginning! Decently written games are Video timed.
