[comp.sys.amiga] A500 Keyboard advice

jon@sun.udel.edu (Jonathan R Deutsch) (08/02/90)

The left shift key on my A500 keyboard is hardly usable, and a simple
cleaning didn't help. Should I go out and buy an entire A500 keyboard
for $110? Is there a better way of fixing a single key?
I was told that if I try to open the keyboard chasis, I'll break
an important seal.
Any info is appreciated.

Depends upon the problem. Assuming it's the usual worn key problem,
then you can take apart the keyboard and glue a strip of aluminium foil
onto the rubberized foot-contact of the key. I did that when the zero
key on my numeric keypad went out and it's worked well ever since.

Well, if your system is still under warranty, do _NOT_ do the above.
Take it to a service centre and let them fix it the right way or replace
it. However, if that's not an option, my method might help out a bit. Oh,
use a good glue that isn't water-soluable (in case anything ever gets
spilled or in case you work in a high-humidity environment) and is strong
but _not_ bulky. Also don't put the keyboard back together until the glue
has dried, and cut the aluminium foil down to match the underside of the
original conductive surface as much as possible.

As always, the problem could be something completely different. Check
the contacts on the printed circuit board to make sure they haven't been
damaged, for example.

The right shift key recently went south on my A500. I took it to my local
dealer, and he was able to replace the pad for the shift key at no charge
(it took them about ten minutes). Unfortunately, I have also had to replace
the entire keyboard. It only cost $80.
