[comp.sys.amiga] Amiga UUCP

lak@lznh.UUCP (<10000>Lisa Krauth) (09/01/87)

I seemed to have missed the Amiga uucp source. Would someone be
kind enough to ship me a copy or repost it? Thanks.

Er, ditto. Thanks.

I to would greatly appreciate a copy of the code - quite afew systems
are willing to let me 'feed', but I have no way to do so...And here in
Charlotte NC, the nearest access I have to usenet is in NY....

A penny save is absurd...

wpl@burdvax.PRC.Unisys.COM (William P Loftus) (11/12/87)

Beta testers wanted for AmigaUUCP (this is not derived from the amiga UUPC).

I have been running AmigaUUCP for three months now with no problems.
Unfortunately, the release of AmigaUUCP beta test is larger than I thought.
So, instead of mailing a copy to everyone, send me a disk and a SASE and I'll
mail it to you. Make sure you have enough postage to get the disk back to yourself
(at least two 22 cent stamps).

If mailing a disk is a problem, send me $5.00 and I'll take care of it.

After beta test I'll package it up better and sent it to FF.

What comes on the disk you ask?

  uucico (master and slave modes)
uuxqt (Only command it recognizes is "rmail")
mail (Can only be used to send mail. This has not been generalized, yet.
Some things that should be read from a file are compiled in)
  rmail (simplistic version)

AmigaCron (just posted to the net. It has been converted to run with UUCP and
compile under lattice. I currently have it running at night calling
             two different machines hourly)

  tarsplit
  compress
  uudecode
  uuencode
  unshar
dme (Matt Dillion's editor -- used by the mail program)

Source and binaries are included for everything (with the exception of dme).
Everything has been compiled with lattice 4.0, except dme and compress.
Compress was compiled with lattice 3.10 (lattice 4.0 barfs on compress due
to large arrays, at least the compiler thinks they are two large).

Not much documentation, so you should be familiar with UUCP.
Really all you need to know is how to modify the L.sys file.

Comming soon.

postnews, readnews (and all the needed programs for USENET.
I have alpha tests up and running).
a real mailer (anyone got source?)
   uux, uucp

Arved@cup.portal.com (Arved Guido Grass) (04/11/89)

I need some help with setting up version 0.5 of Amiga UUCP, and
request someone to e-mail me the following information if they have this
working, or can point me in the right direction.

     1) What file structure should I have. In particular, I do not know
where to set up all the subdirectories for all the news groups I want to
read. For instance, where do the directories start? Is something like
comp.sys.amiga.tech a subdirectory of comp.sys.amiga, or are both
subdirectories of news (i.e. same level of indenture in the file system).

     2) Can AmigaUUCP pass news? I think that the news must be re-batched
to passed down, but how? Is just news that I have posted (using postnews)
given out as news? If I am both, being fed news, and feeding it elsewhere,
how is this managed?

     3) How is old news deleted? Is there a utility, or should I write some
sort of shell script (REXX or Execute) to do this?

Computers are a hobby of mine, not a profession, so please be patient
with me. Before you scream at me, "buy a book," I have bought the H. Sams/
Waite Group book on Unix Communications, and found the section on
administration to be quite thin. It mostly goes over things from a user
standpoint, not how to administrator (telling someone to go see their site
administrator is safe, but a cop-out. I _am_ the site administrator for my
Amiga ;'D).

Please (!) E-mail me. I will attempt to E-mail those who also express
the desire for such information, or will post a summary if sufficient
interest is expressed.

Arved@cup.portal.com (Arved Guido Grass) (05/02/89)

I have been trying to set up AmigaUUCP between two Amigas for a while
now, and would like to pass on my observations for comments on how others
have overcome these potential bugs. These may be particularities of Amigas
talking to each other, or they may be root problems in the software.

Before I begin, let me praise the work that has already been done with
this package. The following is provided in this forum not to bash any
programmers, but to exchange information on the software's shortcommings.
All observations are based on two Amigas running AmigaUUCP version 0.50.

     1. If a connection should fail for some reason, the host Amiga needs
to be rebooted (the Amiga that is polled). Reasons for being unsuccesfull
can be many, from improper login, to breaking the polling Amiga. When in
"receive mode," AmigaUUCP is very particular about what happens, and although
it will drop carrier and hang up O.K., and while the modem will answer O.K.
for the next caller, it will not provide a login for the second caller.

     2. The polling machine must not run with a debug value of 0. This also
means that uupoll will not work between two Amigas. uucico may be run without
any debugging options on the receiving end, but a debug level of at least 1
must be used on the polling Amiga.

     3. There appears to be some problems with the data that is exchanged
after mail and other files are sent. This was carefully observed with debug
level 9 on both machines, and we discovered that in the last data exchanges,
the Amiga polling would not send the expected characters to the host Amiga.

     4. Node names of 8 or more characters are not allowed. I "had my heart
set" on "daylight" as my machine name, but may have to settle for "sunset,"
or some other such nodename.

     5. NOT AMIGAUUCP related: the mount command from ARP 1.3 does not
properly mount the null: device required by AmigaUUCP. Substitution of the
standard MOUNT from AmigaDOS 1.3 seems to cure this problem. It may be a
problem with ARPs MOUNT command, or an incompatibility with some other
background task (Arexx, HandyIcons, Conman, SRT, or the fact that all of the
above programs are being run from Wshell. Then again, it could be the fact
that I _am_ using ARP).

I am NOT a unix or uucp wizard, so if any of the above is due to some
lack of knowledge about unix or uucp, please enlighten me. I would rather
replies be via E-mail, and if response warrents, I will post a followup.

Okay, today is the day for questions...

I checked out swan.ulowell.edu in amiga/comm/uucp* for UUCP. I only found a
patch. Would someone know where I can find Amiga UUCP? I'd like to hook my
beast at home up to our Sun network at work. Am I under the mistaken
impression that there is such a Public Domain package?

email response would be nice... If others also wish to know, send me a
message, and I'll forward what I find.

Thanks!

Where and for how much can I get the latest version of AmigaUUCP?
It's kinda important.

Thanks!
