[comp.sys.amiga] 3D PROFESSIONAL

seanc@pro-party.cts.com (Sean Cunningham) (06/09/90)

Have any of you out there gotten your hands on 3d Professional, from PP&S?

It;s a REALLY nice package...and runs quite well under 2.0 of AmigaDOS. I
haven;t had a chance to play around with all of it;s functions yet, but it
appears to be very powerful. I;ve been having the most fun with generating
X-Specs 3D renderings, using lots of textures and such...

So far I have only two complaints about it...the first, is it won;t let you
switch from its default 640x200 screen, which looks very blocky on the A1950
"14 Multisync. The second one is no raytrace mode, though this is supposed to
be provided for later, as a "custom renderer"...one of the packages most
powerful features is that you can write your own renderer for it (similar to
RenderMan, but not as easily...you have to know C!)...it provides wireframe
(with or without hidden lines removed), solid (facet), Gourard, and Phong
renderers, and will even render fullscreen to the A2024 moniter (1008x800)...I
hope it will be compatible with the FireCracker/24 card. It provides standard
compatibility with the Mimetics FrameBuffer, but this is a very limited board,
for display only...and it also provides compatibility for MicroIllusion;s
Photon Video Transport Controller.

Hmmm...I guess this one;ll keep me occupied until IMAGINE is released...and
that until Hash;s ANIMATION:Journeyman...oh, well.

I have a few questions about 3dpro...

First, When rendering postscript files (both full AND encapsulated) there
seems to be a problem using the scanline Z-buffer. 3dpro will try to
save a seperate file for each scanline completed. Bummer.
Second, I can't seem to get 3dpro to render 24bit postcript files. Is it
capable? Anything over 4 or 6 bit planes and I get the Cannot allocate
framebuffer. This puppy is a memory hog because I'm running a 6meg
A3000 and I have problems with not enough memory (I would normally
understand, but the allocation was cut to bare minimum for the
database size AND I even tried it with ONE object and ONE light source
... no worky, Spooky if you ask me.)
Third, I can switch to 1.3 so it's OK, but the object creation tools (Lathe,
Profile, and Conic) are screwy in OS2.0... too bad.
Fourth, This doesn't really pertain to 3dpro, but has anyone had problems with
the motion blur on large (HAM) animations in Animation Station? As long
anims are small Motion Blur works fine, but when you get larger anims
(over 100 frames or so) AnimStation say "Hey, buddy... you got a bad
       ANIM file!"... bunk.
Fifth, HOW DO YOU DO OPCODE-6 ANIMS IN 3DPRO??!!!?!?!?!?? It take so long
to do it manually (no keyframes and tweens). Is there a way to do
keyframe animation (opcode6) with the scripting language?

Overall, this (3DPRO) is a faily cool tool. It'll be better when the raytracer
comes out, it has some neat features (soft shadows, etc.).
Good job Cryo and PP on your 3d package, but sombody help me out por favor.

Thanx... Clayton Bownds
