[] A friend of mine who is here from England has a chance to buy an old Amiga 500 (1 meg RAM, old chip set), 1070 monitor, and gobs of software for $375. There is no question that this is a very good deal. (Actually, now that I think about it, it may have an external floppy too. However, that's relevant.) Questions: 1) This A500 was manufactured in West Germany - we think. It is also of an elderly vintage. I understand some of the oldest 500/2000 models used the A1000 chipset and are therefore not capable of using the "new" chipset. If so, how can we tell (by, say looking at the motherboard) whether this is the case here? 2) He will want to take it back to England. This leads to the obvious power question. We can purchase power level converters of appropriate amperage for the system; however, there is still the question of 50Mhz vs. 60 Mhz power sources. The converters we can find locally do not convert this frequency. Is this a problem? 3) If this is an A1000 chipset machine, NTSC vs. PAL will be a problem once he starts buying European-made software. How much of a problem is this problem when dealing with productivity software? (He doesn't care about games.) How much does it cost to swap to a PAL Agnus in England? I think that's it.
