[comp.sys.amiga] Disney Presents: The Animation Studio

[ "I must warn you, sir, that anything you say will be ignored." ]

I didn't want to say any more about the program until it had
actually hit a shelf somewhere. Well, at long last, it has. Mitch Lopes
informs me that HT Electronics in Sunnyvale, CA, has already sold out of
their six copies. So now that Actual People are starting to get the thing
into their hands, I thought I should inform you of a few sinkholes I know
about.

If you attempt to load DPaint ANIM brush into Ink-&-Paint, it will
crash. We didn't have the specs on ANIM brush format at the time, and
I thought an ANIM brush was a sufficiently screwy thing that it would be a
non-issue. Well, surprise, Dan Silva made ANIM brushes look almost exactly
like ordinary op-5 ANIM files, and it's similar enough that Ink-&-Paint (and
probably Pencil-Test, too) dies. Sorry 'bout dat.

If you select a page size that is larger than the editing screen
(such as 352 * 220 for overscan), you move around the page by holding down
the SHIFT key and hitting the arrow keys. This feature got left out of the
documentation. (Arguably my fault; I didn't put it in the help requester.)

In the copy I received, I noted a curious problem in the manuals.
If you read page 5-11 in the Getting Started manual, and then move to page
5-12, you'll note that it doesn't seem to logically follow. If you do
precisely the same thing in the User's Guide, it will be more obvious.
Evidently, pages 5-12 and 5-13 got swapped between the two manuals. Pages
5-12 and 5-13 in the User's Guide should actually be in the Getting Started
manual, and vice versa. Based on the context of the material, I can see how
this might have been overlooked. I don't know if this happened to all the
copies.

Anyway, for those of you who purchased the program, I hope this
helps. And I hope you like the program, too.

Thanks! It might have taken me years to figure this one out
on my own!! A quick first reading of the manuals doesn't make
this evident. It may well be the only flaw in what is an
excellent piece of documentation. The documentation and the examples
	provided are extremely helpful..

Like it!?!? It is great!! I have only had a couple of hours to work
with it so far, and I think I am in love! The Animation Studio had the
appearence of a top-notch professional job from top Thanks for helping
produce such a nice, artistic package.t
a pleasure to find a rash of good software lately.

I neglected to mention the other sinkhole I know about.

None of the animators reliably work under 2.0. This is due to a
misfeature present in 2.0's copper list handling. Commodore is aware of the
problem.

If 2.1 looks like it's going to be a long way off, and there's
sufficient demand, I'll see what I can do about crufting together a patch
program.

Since 2.0 isn't "finalized" (read: burned into rom), and since CBM is aware
ot the problem, and since animation capability is one of the Amiga's strong
points ... why should the fix for this problem have to wait until "2.1"?

Or do you know something that the rest of us don't, Leo?

BTW ... just what *is* the "misfeature" ...?

I wasn't aware that 2.0 was already set in ROM. Commodore should not
have a misfeature (read "BUG") like this pass into the final version of 2.0.
Disney is a significant corporate entity, and their backing will make the
Amiga more widely noticed, but what will happen when users find that the
program won't run on Commodore's new operating system? We shouldn't have
to wait for 2.1 to get what we expect out of 2.0.

A patch is better than none, but only if its absolutely necessary!!

Calling a bug a 'misfeature' is like calling a

1.0 wasn't "finalized" either. 1.1 came along and stabilized the
system, fixing copious bugs. 2.0, much as we'd like to claim the contrary,
has bugs and misfeatures. CBM is aware of many 2.0 problems, so they will
undoubtedly address those problems the same way they addressed 1.0 problems:
release a new version.

>BTW ... just what *is* the "misfeature" ...?

A misfeature is a feature that eventually screws someone. 2.0
attempted to fix a copper list misfeature in 1.3. In the process, they
broke *my* copper lists. (And now, chapter 36, volume 73 of, "You Can't
Win.")

I hesitate to get into details for fear you'll flame CATS, which
they don't need right now. Be aware that they're trying their damned best
to make the largest number of people happy.

As far as I'm conerned, if 2.0 WERE the official release,
it would be 10x better than most other major O/S revisions! Take
MS Windows 3.0, OS/2 or what everyone is expecting from System
7.0. It is definitely a usable system. Of course, I'd like to see
the bugs disappear as much as anyone. I have no complaints (yet 8).

Stolen from Jerry Pournelle of all people (who might have gotten it
from someone else). He once commented, "If AT&T had bought Kentucky Fried
Chicken, we would probably see ads for 'Hot Dead Chicken.'" Upon hearing
this, the marketing director for AT&T is said to have chuckled to himself
and said, "You know, we'd probably call it 'Cold Dead Chicken.'"
