[comp.sys.amiga] Amiga Assemblers

davidm@sugar.hackercorp.com (David Martin) (10/10/89)

Help! I need information on what the best Amiga Assembler is.
I am hoping to find an integrated package with all or most
of the following: disassembler, assembler, debugger, LOTS
of demo prgs. etc etc. Thanks.

I would recommend DevPac2 by HiSoft. This is one of the fastest assemblers
that I have seen. And the debugger is great. The editor, debugger and
assembler are all integrated very well and they can also be used as stand
alone programs. It comes on 2 disks with a moderate number of example programs
and a good manual. One of the nice features is when you have an error, the
cursor will automaticly be placed on that error, and Amiga-J will jump to
any other errors. All in all DevPAc2 is a good development tool.

There is a new fully integrated assembler package from Argonaut Software
(that is the creators of Starglider), called 'ArgAsm' . It is claimed to
be the fastest MC68000 assembler on the Amiga (actually faster than the
cross assembler used by many developers on the IBM PC ATs). I can't
remember the address of the company but if you can wait a couple of days
I will see what I can do. If it's of any use, they are based in North
London, U.K.

I have literally used them ALL in the search for the best one. The
final conclusion is CAPE by Inovatronics. I use the the line-based
assembler with TxEd as my editor. It is extremely fast and VERY
compatible with Metascope, a problem that assemblers like AssemPro and
HiSoft run into. HiSoft is the fastest, but again, its compatibility
is not 100%. CAPE also has an AREXX port, where none of the other ones
do. As for a debugger, my favorite is good old Metascope 1.8. Very
powerful, yet very easy to use. Last, "demo progs" are few and far
between. Over 3 years of using assembly on the Amiga, I've managed to
almost fill one disk of sample source code from various authors. A lot
of it has German commentary and doesn't necessarily follow C-A
guidelines. Sample assembly source is few and far between on the
Amiga. Abacus publishes a book called "Amiga Assembly Language." Out
of five available books on the topic, this one is the best. They also
have a disk filled with all the examples in the book. Its very
straight-forward and very handy. Amazing Computing also had a great
series on the topic. Unfortunately, it was never continued...

But Wait!!! - More Info on ArgAsm...

In my earlier follow-up I mentioned a new assembler package by the
name of ArgAsm. Since then I have received more info on this -
from a review in 'Amiga Format' magazine - a British publication.

Here's some of the things they said about the package :

"...ArgAsm is source code compatible with several of its main competitors.
These include HiSoft's Devpac (1 & 2), Inovatronic's CAPE... and
Metacomco's ASSEM."

"From your very first use, ArgAsm's astounding operational speed will
become more than evident."

"The combination of copatibility with existing assemblers and an
operational speed that even puts PDS systems to shame, deserves to
 make ArgAsm theamiga industry standard"

My comments:

The package includes a multi-window editor but there is no monitor/debugger
included in the package.

In my earlier posting I also promised to find out their address, so
here it is :

Argonaut Software
7 Millway
Millhill
London
U.K.

NOTE: I am in no way connected with Argonaut Software. However, if you do
make an order please mention my name - that is to see if they will send
me a free copy (no other motives).

All the comments given above are taken from the above named magazine, where
quoted. All others are my personal veiws/findings.

I have both HiSoft and CAPE, and use HiSoft mainly because of speed. I have not
found any incompatibility with MetaScope. I am very much looking forward to Jez
San's ArgAsm (great name), said to be much faster then even HiSoft's.

tschiller@dahlia.waterloo.edu (Thorsten Schiller) (08/15/90)

Greetings...

I am interested in learning assembly on the amiga... however, what I lack is
a fairly good assembler. I would prefer a PD assembler but if anyone could
suggest a decent commercial one that would be appreciated as well.
 Another priority is good documentation...

On the same note, if anyone could suggest some good reference books to use in
conjunction with the assembler I would greatly appreciate it...

 Many thanks in advance...
