[comp.sys.amiga] can I attach 100M HD to A500 ?

PROHVK32@TREARN.BITNET (Cem Turgay) (08/15/90)

Hello,

I knew and I saw that A500 can support from 20 up to 40 MB. HD
so everyone use SCSI interface for this.
But I want to know, 100 MB. (or greater) HD can be used ?
Can I use it with complete 100 MB or partitioned (40 + 30 + 30) ?
Which (or what kind of) interfaces and HDs can I use, how about
their cost in USA. or Europe ?
Thanks in advance.

Well, virtually any SCSI adaptor that will run on an A500 should be able
to handle a 100M or larger disk. You need AmigaDOS 1.3 at least to handle
large partitions (I think 1.3.2 can handle 600M partitions, and 2.0 is
essentially unlimited).

I think you may be confused over something. Most of the SCSI _packages_
(by that, I mean a SCSI adaptor and drive package) usually comes with
a 20 or 40M drive as part of the deal, but that does not mean that if
you buy the adaptor and drive separately that you can't use BIG drives.

As for cost, SCSI adaptors run a wide range of prices -- from $100 U.S. to
over $300 U.S. The main problem with the 500 is that you'll probably have
to buy a SCSI controller in a box with power supply like the TrumpCard/500
or the MicroBotics StarBoard 2/500 with StarDrive. That's likely to push
your costs up. Sorry!
