[comp.sys.amiga] A3000's Mac IIci's and quality control

jlille@umaxc.weeg.uiowa.edu (Brian Heil) (08/13/90)

I've been following the 'my 3000 is a piece of crap why can't Commodore do
anything right' thread for some time and thought I'd share a little story
about Macintoshes and quality control.

But first... something completely different... an disclaimer...
I know four machines does not a sample make but all the same our problems have
been annoying... it's not just Commodore-Amiga that has a problem.

A couple weeks ago we got 4 Mac IIci's and a bunch of SE/30's for our student
computing lab. When installing the IIci's we had a few problems... One
machine's hard drive refused to spin up... no problem, call it in and on to the
next machine... which had memory problems. 50% so far. Third machine,
hardware checked out, but I had to install the system software 4 times before
it would even boot properly. 2 weeks later it still hiccups on startup every
so often. Fourth machine has worked fine. That's 75% bad in my experience
with Apple's $4000+ machines. I won't even mention my experience with
Mutli-Finder...I'll just say :(

My Amiga 1000 has been going strong since 1985 (yup that's right no Extra-
Halfbright on my Ami). There's probably a moral to this story but I'm too
tired to think of one.

The sound chip on a new Mac IIci in my office went bad in less then a
week.

Had the same problem in two other Macs I know of on campus.

I've had three CBM machines (C64, C128, Amiga 500) and have never had a
problem with the hardware. Maybe I've been lucky, but I think Commodore
hardware is at least as reliable as anyone else's hardware.
