[comp.sys.amiga] SUPRA 2400 2.0 upgrade

jon@sun.udel.edu (Jonathan R Deutsch) (08/14/90)

Judging by the responses of other net-ers, wouldn't it seem logical
for Supra to lower the price of the upgrade so that many
*previously happy* customers would *remain happy* and continue
to have faith and trust in a company that seems to make quality
products at decent prices?

Supra:
Do you look at any long-term effects of your decisions?

Sure, $40 might very well be a fair amount to charge for what you
put into the upgrade, but is it fair for the *customer* to pay $40
for features that other Supra 2400 owners inherently have?

How about opening up an option that the customer install the set,
thereby eliminating the 1/2 behind-the-bench work?
That just might bring the price into an area where *many more*
customers might invest in it.

Or, how about not making a *profit* off of an upgrade!
(I have no proof that Supra is profitting from this, but
from the way the post by "Kenny" sounded {"the $40 upgrade
isn't really that unreasonable"}, it sounds like he's trying
to justify the charge, which wouldn't be necessary if they
were selling it at cost.)

So, there are a few pointers, even if they weren't needed.

And, by the way- if it was $20, I would invest.

If the upgrade were LESS than $20 dollars, I would invest! It would only
seem fair for those who already have the modem, not to pay an EXTRA amount just
to get the same features that those people who now buy their supra get at the
same or LESS than we paid. I seriously think Supra could come up with a better
deal than that.

Obviously, they don't think so, but if they did, where could one who was willing
get a new upgrade? Are they sending the upgrade to any local stores, or does one have to send in the modem to get the new chips? (I, for one, could not do
'2-3 weeks for delivery' without my modem!)

Thanks all,
@jap

Hey, folks...this is getting almost as out of hand as the discussion
over in the handheld group about HP's rom releases on the 48...

Your "old" modem still works, right? It does all the neat stuff that
made you buy it in the first place, right? Sure, people that
are buying them now are getting "more." But they haven't had the
modem as long as you. Supra's being pretty cool by letting you
upgrade your modem for a fairly reasonable cost.

Heck, they could have pulled an Apple (tm) and released a SupraModem
II, Plus, or whatever, with no upgrade path at all. (8^)

Even worse, they could stop trying to make better modems, fail
miserably in the market, go out of business, and leave your modem
orphaned, like the Banana PC Jr.

dylan
(who's not upgrading his SupraModem, since I don't need the added
functions...yet.)

I believe the upgrade cost is based pretty much on the chip price. I'm
sure they have a handling charge in there also. Since the chip is mounted in a
PLCC socket with no relief holes behind it, I doubt if you'll see upgrades from
your local dealer. If you want to do the upgrade yourself, just buy the newer
Intel modem chip and slap it in yourself. Good luck in finding that chip for
only $20 though! :-)

:Thanks all,
