[comp.sys.amiga] Switching between PAL/NTSC when 3000 is on safe?

unhd (Nick C Fitanides) (08/16/90)

Hello All,

I'm using another friends account and have been wondering if this
would be safe to do while the 3000 is on. I Slapped a little DPDT
switch on the back of my 3000 and use it to jump between PAL and NTSC
after coldboots, but saw a guy switching it while the computer was on
and wondered if this would disturb agnus at all...

If this is alright, it would be great to just give my 3000 the three
finger salute and flip the switch, instead of coldbooting!

Comments anybody?

-Layton (lovin' life w/my new ami)

Why are you cold-booting at all? I don't have any problems switching over to
PAL on the fly, through preferences "ScreenMode" under OS2.0, or using PAL
under OS1.3...why the hardware switch?

First... the "little switch" on the back of the A3000 is NOT for switching
between PAL and NTSC. It is an on/off switch for Amber, the de-interlacing
chip standard in all A3000's (It works like a flicker fixer). Switching
between NTSC and PAL is done from Sys:prefs/screenmode.... it's a software
switch.

Second... It doesn't (to my knowledge) hurt the A3000 whatsoever to toggle the
Amber when the machine is on.

Third... As far as switching kickstarts, there is a hack on PeopleLink's
database that can be installed to allow change of kickstart without turning
the machine off.
