[comp.sys.amiga] Looking for a high resolution graphics board

sjm@well.sf.ca.us (Stephen Moehle) (08/18/90)

I am looking (for a freind) for a high resolution graphics board for an
2000 or 3000. He is interested in both lots of pixels and lots of colors
and would like to know what the various combinations and trade offs are.
Hopefully price would be less than $3000. Genlock capabilities are not
needed, but it should produce analog RGB or broadcast quality video.
Thanks for any and all answers.

Right now, your choices are somewhat limited...but then display cards for the
Amiga are just starting.

1.) Mimetics FrameBuffer
2.) Impulse's FireCracker/24
3.) NewTek's VideoToaster

The board from Mimetics has a resolution of 746 x 484, and 21bpp, or 2.1M
colours...it's OK for doing 3D renderings with a singleframe controller to
tape, or capturing live video...but it's slow, and has no paint capabilities.

Impulse's card has a resolution of 512 x 512 with 1Mb of RAM, or 1024 x 512
with 2Mb of RAM. It comes with a paint program, is faster than the Mimetics
board, and is the only card with RGB out.

The VideoToaster, along with all its video effects, has dual framebuffers.
While he didn't state what the max resolution of the buffers was, Allen
Hastings stated that he does renderings at 1536 x 960 to the toaster, and that
was what he was showing at Siggraph.

There is also the DCTV from Digital Creations...but I'm not sure on its specs.

All of the above mentioned products are under the $2K mark...
