I would be much happier using LSE if: 1. It allowed multi-keystroke editing commands. I'm talking a genuine state machine driven input. This would let me rebind the sucker into something more closely resembling emacs. For now, I use mg simply because it's the only thing I can use across all the machines I work on without driving myself crazy having to switch to a different keystroke set. 2. It would do away with the "menus" (the multi-choice-on-a-line selectors, that is) and just like you bind keys to those actions directly. Granted, that's probably only possible if #1 is implemented. What I think should be done instead, however, is to extend mg so that it supports the desired features of LSE. Namely, "C" awareness and the ability to spawn the compiler as a subtask, finding the errors as necessary. Furthermore, I think that Lattice should be the ones to do it, chucking LSE out the window. Should I say it? Should I invite the religious wrath of hundreds down upon my head? Aww, why not. I don't get enough mail anyway :-). We really really don't need Yet Another Editor. What we need is a one nice general purpose editor that people can rebind to their heart's content and run across multiple platforms. I use GNU Emacs, myself, but I can see where a smaller, quicker and (dare I say) more portable editor would also be desirable. I think mg fills the bill nicely. I do, in fact, also use mg on my unix system quite a bit when I need to do a quick in-and-out edit on something (and my GNU emacs window is either not immediately available or in the middle of doing something else I'd rather not touch). Rather than put the money into Doing It From Scratch, why don't folks like Lattice pick something already ubiquitous and add the desired features? Some would immediately say that mg is not friendly enough, but I disagree. For starters, it's quite a bit more friendly that LSE, so that point is almost moot before we start. Secondly, it's been hacked by the Amiga crew enough that I'd have to say it's more than friendly enough. Menus, browsers, colored text, almost all the features that Amiga folks come to expect are there. If people like Lattice put their time on it, it would be even better. ARrex s upport for mg? Why not? Just my two religious cents.
