 After posting this, I received some mail saying "What -g option?"

 Mea culpa. The version of lharc we have is 1.02, the source for which 
 I got from utsun.s.u-tokyo.ac.jp (133.1.7.250)

 The usage information of our version, which includes the modification
 I made to turn uid/permissions off as the default, is as follows.

If you have trouble getting the source, send me mail, and I will mail the
source to you (it is about 50K in a compressed tar archive) , or if a few
people want this, I will upload it to /incoming on XanthII. (According to
the README file, it is freeware)
