This appeared in the Toronto Star 83.10.08 Washington (AP) - Every 60 seconds, the world spends $1.3 million for military purposes - and 30 children die for want of food and inexpensive vaccines, a new report says. The shocking statistics were revealed yesterday in a study sponsored by several private U.S. organizations, including the Arms Control Association anf the Rockefeller Foundation. ... "... current world budget of $660 billion per year, a stockpile of 50,000 nuclear weapons, 25 million men under arms, 1 billion people living under military-controlled governments, more than 9 million civiliants killed in conventional wars since Hiroshima" ... The cost of one new nuclear submarine equals the annual education budget of 23 developing countries with 160 million school age children. In a year when U.S. farmers were paid to take almost 40.5 million hectares [ approxiamately equivalent to acres ] of cropland out of production, 450 million people in the world are starving. Sorry to take up your valuable time, but these are numbers we all need to be aware of. There are no simple solutions, but something has to be better than this! -- Dave Mason, U.
