[comp.sys.amiga] Mattel power glove

vrr@cbnewsj.att.com (veenu.r.rashid) (08/19/90)

Does anyone have information on the engineering of the Mattel power glove.
I'm wondering if it would be possible to connect it to the amiga with suitable
reverse-engineering. i heard an RS232 version is due out in a couple months.
Anybody have comments, suggestions, info?

An extensive discussion on the Mattel Power Glove has been going on
in sci.virtual-worlds almost forever; take a look!

Latest news is that a lawsuit ended with a new party in control of glove
sales, and instead of Nintendo's limited engineering information, there
should be a glove for sale with full "high precision location" hardware
and software interface specs in about two months.

The down side is, the price about tripled, from $70 to $200, per the same
posting.

(Guess who gets to pay for the lawsuit? Don't you just love lawyers?)

There is an article in a recent Byte that describes connecting the Power Glove
to a PC, I believe

I have seen an add offering an amiga interface with software to drive
the glove in one of the amiga mags, Amazing Computing, I think. The
interface is 50$. I will try to locate more info.

Make sure this interface supports the extended mode (X,Y,Z,Pitch,Yaw,5 fingers
The simple mode simply emulates a Nintendo controller. As for hooking it
up I am working on it. VPL research designed the glove and has recently won
a lawsuit supporting there ownership of the technology. They are going to
announce a special Powerglove with a serial interface in a couple of months
for $200 bucks (everything VPL sells is expensive but it is state of the art
VR technology). There is an adapter that works with the Mattel version of
the glove and I am trying to talk to the guy at VPL who knows about this but
he's been out of town. The article in BYTE magazine (july 1990) only shows
how to read the standard info out of the glove. The guy who wrote the article
reversed engineered the signals to get it. There is a new game comming out
for the Power glove on the Nintendo in a few months that will use the
extended mode and the guy from BYTE says he will reverse engineer it if the
info doesn't get out sooner.

I thought Mattel had licensed the DataGlove technology from VPL to make
the PowerGlove. Why did they have to resort to a lawsuit?
