[comp.sys.amiga] DBW_RENDER

filip@alberta.UUCP (Don Filipchuk) (07/29/88)

    Hi,

I was wondering if anybody has been able to ray trace a
fractal surface with DBW Render v1.0 (the PD one).

I have tried several (dozen!) times and get the same scenario :

I set up a huge stack (recursion is funny that way) and run the
program. I watch (via MachII) the program start to munch on all
my available memory ( ~ 600 - 750K ) and then crash. Sometimes
it is so polite as to inform me that "MALLOC --- OUT OF MEMORY"
(I assume that this is probably a system message) but usually it
just crashes, several times in a spectacular manner (ie. purple lines
across screen,random static everywhere...).

The point is this... I only use a recursion level of 1
( one fractal/stochastic subdivision of ONE triangular surface )
and it still eats up all the memory I have and then crashes.
I would not think that a single level of recursion eats up close
to a meg of memory. I set the stack as high as I can (to 250 000)
but to no avail. I do remember to define wave sources as well.

Has anybody got the fractal surface to work on that program?
I **SUSPECT** that it is perhaps buggy... I am *VERY* careful
when setting up my script file.

Anyhow, I will soon have the source code (right Kjohn?) and
will be able to determine for myself...

(I shouldn't talk about memory hungry programs... the ray tracer
I am working on here once did a core dump that was 32 MEG !
Now *that* is a memory hungry program.... )

   Hi Everyone,

Sorry to post this here but I lost Jason's mailing address.
Jason, sorry this is so late (see above).

     Hi Jason,
re: your note about DBW Render 2.0....
You can purchase it at the following place, I guess.
I was not interested in getting 2.0 because source is not
included (so I was told by the person who gave me this adress).
I have 1.0 but no source (as yet) but am expecting source
code in the mail Real Soon Now.
(Received source for DBW 1.0 this past tuesday ... Thanks KJohn!)

      Try the following address :

           William T. Baldridge
           2650 Sherwood Lane
           Pueblo, CO 81005

The guy who sent me this address said it is a shareware donation
of $36 (suggested). This gets you bug fixes, updates, etc. (so I
am told). Again, I have not tried this address, it was sent to me
by somebody else. So good luck....

I've never been that interested in ray tracing in the past so I never looked
at this, but now I'm curious. Isn't DBW_RENDER V1.0 Public Domain or
Shareware. It seems like I saw it in my Fish collection but couldn't find
it in a quick search last night. Does anybody know where it is?

					 Thanks,

Hello,

Over the past few months I've been looking through my Amiga
information sources in search of a good PD raytracer. I'm come across a
couple that are kind of nice, but one doesn't have really good quality and
the other ones documentation leaves a lot to be desired.

The later program in question is DBW Render. Now then I have two
questions on this subject. One is Ami specific the other's not.

1. Does anybody have more extensive documentation for/or understand DBW
Render well enough to explain some of it's functions to a novice?

2. Does anybody know where the sources for the mainframe (original?) version
of DBW Render can be found?

If you can help me on this please mail responses so as not to tie up
things here in C.S.A.

	Thank you in advance.

editor, So where can I get them?! The lastest I have is like 1.0!!! I want
2.0! Please let me know where can I get it.
