I have also had no luck with CommonTeX from FINTUVM. I believe it was uudecode that choked on what I got, twice. Is there any other way of getting it? (Eventually I'll break down and get AmigaTeX, but I want to make sure I'll get enough use out of it to warrant it first.) A few weeks ago I snarfed the source to CommonTeX v2.9 from uunet.uu.net and compiled it on my Amiga using Lattice C 5.04. All that was required was to rewrite the makefile so dain-bramaged lmk could handle it. Once it compiled, though, I found that I didn't have enough memory to run it (only 1 MB) so I can't say if it works or not. If you have a couple of megs of memory on your system and a C compiler, you might want to give this a try. Where can I get a copy of CommonTex? It was on xanth, but just when I requested it, it was deleted! Arrrrgh! I'm also looking for a program named FontMaker V1.0, which is said to be able to create a Sculpt object of any text line in any standard Amiga font. -- ------------------------------------ Chris Brand - wizard@sosaria.imp.com "Justice is the possession and doing of what one is entitled to" - Platon ------------------------------------

I have installed CommonTex on my machine. Here's a quick overview what's available and how much it costs: The system is split into modules, you only have to buy the modules you want: 1) basic TEX system (4 disks including tex, some fonts, the format files plain, latex, plaing and latexg (german versions), previewer and 120 dpi 24 pin printer driver) 40.- DM (10 DM is about 5.5 US$) 2) 180 dpi 24 pin printer driver with fonts (3 disks) 30.- DM 3) 360 dpi 24 pin printer driver with fonts (5 disks) 50.- DM 4) INITEX (2 disks) 20.- DM 5) Source codes (2 disks) 20.- DM 6) LaTEX book, TEX book (4 disks) 40.- DM 7) Metafont (7 disks) 70.- DM 8) GnuTEX (adapted version of GnuPlot) (2 disks) 40.- DM 9) Tangle/Weave/P2C (3 disks) 50.- DM 10) Deskjet/Laserjet printer driver with fonts (11 disks) 120.- DM 11) Epson 9 pin printer driver with fonts (6 disks) 60.- DM 12) Demos and macros (2 disks) 20.- DM 13) BibTEX 20.- DM The system was compiled on a Sun using GNU CC, thus it's much faster than Aztec-compiled versions (or so the author says, don't flame me for this :-). It comes with installation scripts, documentation (not much) and demo .tex files. Of course it's public domain, you can copy it but you're not allowed to make it available via bbs or ftp or sell it as public domain. You're right, for public domain the prices are high enough, but since the system is really good (I didn't have any guru yet and it's FAST) I think it's all right. If you have any problems you can even call the author himself, he offers this service. What I like very much about it is the fact that it supports all European formats (e.g. for letters, DIN A4) and all those special characters like vd| without having to type something like \"o for v (yesyes, you could include that yourself with a macro, but for a beginner it's always better to have such things included). I also bought the LaTEX book by Leslie Lamport ----> never saw something equally amazing before. I love it! Uh, if it's really public domain you can do anything you want with
it, and some of these codes may be copylefted. Not to slight
W|bbeling's work, but this smacks suspiciously of software hoarding....

If it is public domain there are *NO* restrictions on its redistribution and NO reason to pay ANY money for it. If it is just a "compilation" of Dr. Knuth code, then it is DEFINITELY public domain. Note the AmigaTeX is NOT public domain at all, since the code is highly modified from the original Stanford Distribution and contains features not available in the PD version (previewer, Arexx ports, etc..). -- Marco -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= "Xerox sues somebody for copying?" -- David Letterman -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

A couple months ago I sent out a LISTSERV request for the CommonTEX distribution and received several parts but there were several that did not make it through to me. For various reasons I have not gotten around to following up on it till recently. When I resent the request I got a "MAILFAILED -Host Unknown". The LISTSERV address I used in each incident was: MAMMUTTI.UTU.FI!LISTSERV@UUNET.UU.NET Does some one have a correction to that address, or another site that can provide the CommonTEX distribution? Any help appreciated. Regards, Jerry Whitman - keeper of the FishXref and FishCon.
