Someone (or two) explain to me the IFF sound format for one-shots and instruments. What does 'SamplesPerHighCycle' have to do with where the sample will show up in music software's octave range? Do samples in the instrument format really have to have a playback rate of 8363 samps/second? I have Perfect Sound 3.0 and Sonix 2.0. PSound does a crappy job of explaining the correlation between SamplesPerHighCycle and octave. Every instrument I save shows up in a different octave--it seems totally random. I want to save one-octave instruments with playrates different from 8363 and have the sample be playable in the mid-staff range in Sonix. Surely someone out there knows what's going on. If you have experience with programming routines involving IFF instruments, or if you can help me, please email me. Two or three people I can think of right off the bat that have at least written routines to play samples are Peter (or Karl) at Hackercorp and Rob Peck. If you read this and you can help, please email me! I'm looking for detailed explanations of the IFF file format, especially on how it deals with sound. What are the best references? Also, does it allow for sound compression? Digitized data other than 12bit? What options does it support?
