[comp.sys.amiga] HP LaserJet IIP on an Amiga

JKT100@psuvm.psu.edu (JKT) (08/29/90)

I just bought a LaserJet IIP for my Amiga. I chose it over the DeskJet+
because I thought I might need/want PostScript compatibility in the
future. But I have some questions for anyone else using this printer
on their Amiga:

What software do you usually use with it for word processing or
desktop publishing? I have ProWrite 3.0 and ProPage 1.31 and
have tried both in an effort to get 300 dpi printouts with this
printer, with little success thus far. ProPage ran the
printer out of memory very quickly, and ProWrite never seemed to
give better than 72 dpi resolution even when set for higher.

Do you recommend getting the PostScript cartridge? What is a good
price to pay for it?

Do you recommend getting more memory? Again, what is a good price
to pay for the board? I know you need 2 megs minimum for PostScript,
but do you recommend more?

So far the LaserJet printer driver supplied with 1.3 is doing the
job, but, as with the DeskJet+, might there be a better one out
there? If so, where do I get it?

Thanks in advance. I know these are a lot of questions, but my
dealer from whom I purchased it only knows IBM, and the HP manual
also only refers to IBM. This newsgroup is the only resource I
have! :-)

Kurt:

I have a LJ IIP on my 2000 and it works just fine. However, you will
need to add memory to the printer to get 300DPI graphics larger than
1/2 page. The minimum amount of memory you can add is 1meg. I am note
very familiar with word processer and other DTP applications, but if
they depend in sending bitmap fonts to the printer, you'll need the
    extra memory.

On to extra memory. I purchased a JetRam board for my printer. There
    are several advantages:

	1) less expensive
	2) expandable (1-4mb) on one card
	3) uses readily available 256k X 4 chips (100ns or better)

	Blank card is about $80.00
	1mb card is about $150.00

You will need at least 1Mb of memory to get full page graphics (300dpi).
I use WordPerfect which can run with 512Kb (which is the "base" IIP).

I think the IIp comes with 512k, right? According to some quick calculations,
you need at least one megabyte to print a full page at 300x300 dpi:

8.5"x11"x300x300

  8x1024
