[comp.sys.amiga] CD-ROM drive and Fish collection is a reality

sparks@corpane.UUCP (John Sparks) (09/06/90)

Boy! remember us talking about getting a CD-ROM drive for the Amiga and
putting the Fish disk collection on it, and what the heck would we call it?

Well.... It's Heeeeere!!

I saw this ad in the latest Amiga World

From Xetec (913) 827-0685

CD-ROM System

Xetec brings the cutting edge of optical technology to the Amiga with the
CDx-650 SCSI drive systems. Now, unlimited access to vast amounts of information
is possible with removable, non-volatile CD-ROM discs having capacities to
650 meg (750 floppies). Reads industry standard ISO 9660/High Sierra discs
(same format used in Commodore's new CDTV).

Audio compact discs. In addition, the CDx systems include the ability to play
conventional digital audio CDs with supplied software through stereo line out
or headphone jacks.

Take your pick. The external model, CDx-650e features a rugged compact enclosure
with built in power supply, and dueal SCSI connectors for daisy chaining.
Economical internal model also available.

Free Software
-------------

Currently available from Xetec is our Fish & More (tm) Vol. 1 CD-ROM
which includes the Fred Fish library (up to #360) and additional PD software
totalling over 400 megabytes of data. Fish & More is included free with the
purchase of any CDx system (a $2000 value if purchased on floppies!).

CDx-650i internal system........$599
      for the A-2000/2500/3000

CDx-650e external system........$699
      for all models

[Shows a picture of the drive. It is white with a covered slot for the CD
has a busy light an eject button and what looks like a volume control and
headphone jack on the front also.]

DISCLAIMER: I do not represent or endorse Xetec or the CDx drives. I am just
relaying the information I found in Amiga World.

I have yet to see the add for the Xitec CD-ROM player that everyone is
talking about because I can't find a copy of AmigaWorld anywhere. I was
wondering if someone could tell me what software they have for retrieval
off of the CD-ROM. It seems to me that most MSDOS CD-ROMS come with
specialized retrieval software to access the information contained on the
disk. Presumably, the Amiga could read these disks with this CD-ROM drive,
but wouldn't be able to run the access programs w/o some kind of transformer
or bridgeboard arrangement. Any ideas?

             Thanks, Keith Amidon
